3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle (50cl). BB 30 Oct 2011 (consumed almost 2 years after best-before date, but apparently this beer has aged gracefully). Pitch black colour, half-inch dark beige - verging on brown - head. Quite good retention, settles as a thin film with a small amount of lacing. Intriguing aroma of roasted malt and sour cherries, with smoked meat, balsamic vinegar, wood, cigars. Full body, soft carbonation. Taste is sweet-and-sour (slightly more sour than sweet) and has a mild bitterness. Finish is dry and slightly tart, with a sour cherry dominance.

The pour on this is just gorgeous. An almost black liquid with about the darkest brown head I’ve seen on a beer. Really just a lovely looking Imperial. Nose is vinous, chocolately, with some dark fruit and raisins. Flavors echo the nose, with more emphasis on the vinous qualities, though with the chocolate coming through as the beer warms. Really very nice.

It’s thick and opaque with no head. A touch off sweetness and a touch of bitterness serve up complexity and toasty.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Dense black pour with a 3 finger, creamy brown head. Aroma is loaded with chocolate and nutty notes, some toffee, a little dark fruit, mild coffee, roast, light char and lactose sweetness. Flavor is bittersweet chocolate right away and for a long time, leading into some incredibly rich nutty notes, a little dark fruit, toffee rich chocolate chip cookie, just a hint of char and smoke, lactose sweetness and some floral, pine and spicy hops to the finish. Heavy body, with a creamy, slightly chewy feel, light to moderate carbonation and a surprisingly neutral finish. This is a fantastic Imperial Stout, it might not be the most complex, but it makes up for it by being extra tasty, and for having lots of sweet flavors without being all that sweet. At room temperature, it is a little hot and boozy, but not overly so, it still drinks nice.

3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
50cl bottle, served in Duvel cup. Pours pitch black with medium brown head, very good looking. The aroma is chocolate, caramel and roasted malts. Peculiar. The flavour is not as sweet as expected considering the smell: lots of dark chocolate, roasted malts and hops. The alcohol provides a warm sensation, definetly well integrated. Full body, good carbonation. Good job and nice contrast.

Tap: black pour with no head or carbonation. Aroma is charred roasted grain, chocolate, toffee and nuts. Flavor is nutty roast with charred grain, toffee, and leave a bit of spicy tingle on the tongue. Interesting flavors, nice drinking, I would drink more.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
On tap at Good Karma in San Jose. It pours a dark brown color with a small brown head. The aroma is nicely toasty with chocolate and some licorice. The flavor is smooth and chocolaty… very rich with low carbonation. Good one. Tried next to a Uinta Labyrinth and didn’t seem to stand up very well…

for a dark, 11% beer with brett, this one is extremely smooooth. stout-black, with a thin but firm creamy head. mild brett aroma and pleasant brett flavor, melding with mild roast flavors. almost creamy smooth. doesn’t taste like an 11% beer -- no sharp edges.

500mL bottle. Pours thick black with almost no head. Aroma of fresh roast coffee beans mixed with molasses. Deep complex flavour that includes coffee/toffee/molasses/licorice although it is almost flat. Worth a shot.
