COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Odins Tipple was meant to be a strong beer, but we changed our minds...its still strong but we wont follow the mega strong trend. It should be possible to make great beer without the extreme alcohol potency. Odins Tipple is now approx 11% abv, itís a dark almost black beer from lots and lots of chocolate malt. Its the malt that contributes the flavor...no added coffee or anything else, Its got a great body without being old engine oil and still very drinkable due to the wild yeast we use. This beer is made with a single strain of wild yeast and the recipe is dead simple.

Poured an almost inky-black from a 0.5L bottle into a stemless snifter. No head formed, just some bubbles that quickly dissipated and left a dark tan ring around the black abyss within. On my second glass I purposely tried to form a head (pouring high and straight), but this brew was determined to stand its ground, again leaving only the inviting darkness. We sometimes use terms like "no light can pass through it" to describe how dark a given Stout might be. In this case I took advantage of having no stem on the glass, and placed a halogen flashlight squarely against its bottom. This Stout swallowed everything that bulb could put out, so ... "no light can pass through it". Really! The aroma was all chocolate. I expected (and hoped for) coffee, but it wasnít there. On my first sip I felt it was too cold, and decided to let it set for several minutes. My second sip revealed an immediate, but soft sweetness, followed by a smooth transition to a moderate bitter at the end. This is a full body Stout thatís "thick and slick" on the palate. Very soft carbonation, but not flat at all. It possesses a quiet, moderately long finish. Also, given the 11% abv I was surprised (and pleased) that the alcohol never made itself evident. This was a very enjoyable beer. And for what it is, itís a "Great Beer". That said, for my own liking, it wasnít as complex as I would have liked. The sweetness was constant, and I think a hint of coffee would have been ideal. But you can put this one in my Christmas stocking any time. Job well done by the brewers at Haandbryggeriet.

Fruity, ashtray and coffee. Flavor has tons of coffee, 70% choc and dark fruits. The farmhouse ale yeast makes this beer have a slight belgian character in the aroma and flavor. Not overly carbonated though. This was good.

500 mL bottle. As black a beer, and as dark a head, as youíll find. 5/5 if the head had lasted more than two minutes. Smells big, roasty, fruity, chocolate covered cherries, that sore of thing. The flavour is more milk chocolate, with some sweetened coffee. A nice hint of booze in the finish. Good body, but not heavy.

Tap at Eric The Red Moscow. Deep black, cream head, weak sweet aroma with notes of chocolate. Full body but dry thanks to brett. More coffee then chocolate in taste, bitter enough. A good one but not the kind of RIS i like.

Shared, cellared 0.5L bottle poured to snifters, showing a very dark mahogany, with modest, light tan head foam, and light spots of lacing. The nose began with slight, age & yeast prompted hints as freezer burn scent & sausage, then roastiness, cocoa, dark fruit as plum & prune, with a bit of smokiness & char. The yeasty oddities, though somewhat inconsequential, didnít transfer to the taste, as it was made up of nearly similar notes, adding roasted & earthy bitterness, boozy warmth, and low carbonation, all in a medium to full body. A robust brew.

Bottle. Pitch black, thock, beige head. Aroma of licorice, chocolate, roasted malts. In taste sweet, chocolate notes with vanilla and licorice flavours. Full bodied, thick, bold, soft carbonated, very smooth. Light bitter finish, roasty. Very good ris.

Thick black pour with lots of foam. Thereís a strong aroma of chocolate malt, licorice and possibly some vanilla. The taste is equally heavy; a full bodied beer with roasted malt, chocolate and dark fruit. Nice and enjoyable to drink with a long lasting aftertaste. To add to the atmosphere, the abv is well hidden. Thereís been a lot said about the changes in the way this beer has been brewed (mostly negative), so it must have been one ripper of a beer before!

Mocca head, almost black ImpSto. Roasty, very reach aromas. Very balanced taste. Oily texture, full body, bitter and long aftertaste, a little salty and sour. Nice.
