Odins Tipple was meant to be a strong beer, but we changed our minds...its still strong but we wont follow the mega strong trend. It should be possible to make great beer without the extreme alcohol potency. Odins Tipple is now approx 11% abv, itís a dark almost black beer from lots and lots of chocolate malt. Its the malt that contributes the flavor...no added coffee or anything else, Its got a great body without being old engine oil and still very drinkable due to the wild yeast we use. This beer is made with a single strain of wild yeast and the recipe is dead simple.

Poured an almost inky-black from a 0.5L bottle into a stemless snifter. No head formed, just some bubbles that quickly dissipated and left a dark tan ring around the black abyss within. On my second glass I purposely tried to form a head (pouring high and straight), but this brew was determined to stand its ground, again leaving only the inviting darkness. We sometimes use terms like "no light can pass through it" to describe how dark a given Stout might be. In this case I took advantage of having no stem on the glass, and placed a halogen flashlight squarely against its bottom. This Stout swallowed everything that bulb could put out, so ... "no light can pass through it". Really! The aroma was all chocolate. I expected (and hoped for) coffee, but it wasnít there. On my first sip I felt it was too cold, and decided to let it set for several minutes. My second sip revealed an immediate, but soft sweetness, followed by a smooth transition to a moderate bitter at the end. This is a full body Stout thatís "thick and slick" on the palate. Very soft carbonation, but not flat at all. It possesses a quiet, moderately long finish. Also, given the 11% abv I was surprised (and pleased) that the alcohol never made itself evident. This was a very enjoyable beer. And for what it is, itís a "Great Beer". That said, for my own liking, it wasnít as complex as I would have liked. The sweetness was constant, and I think a hint of coffee would have been ideal. But you can put this one in my Christmas stocking any time. Job well done by the brewers at Haandbryggeriet.

Bottle poured into a tulip -- Been passively looking for this beer for about 3 years now, and finally success. A jet black brew that you can tell is a good stout. The sour yeast adds a nice dimension that can keep you pondering this brew until the very last.

Bottle. Aroma is intensive dark chocolate and coffee, some liquorice and alcohol. Black colour, brown head. Too much alcohol for me. So-so.

Pours thick and black, burnt molasses, creamy tan head that disappeared very quickly. This beer attacks the senses, strong chocolate, coffee, wheat and citrus with a slightly ashy, smokey aroma. Thick sweet and chewy. Doughy, wheaty thickness, with lots of milk chocolate and toffee sweetness and citrus tang. Grassy herbal hops and burnt malts give a great bitterness to balance. Burnt toast and cacao finish the beer to balance out the sweet alcoholic malts. Finishes thick and ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Kind of beer I just want to like. It is a precious delicacy. Prunes, plums and dark stuff, slight bit of chocolate and coffee. Right amount of CO2 for this type of beer. More chocolate in the taste than in the aroma. Very sweet aroma. Basically no head after leaving it for a minute. Thick, light brown head when pouring it slightly hard. Basically no hops. Sugar in taste, but not too much. Some alcohol for sure, but not in a bad way. Overall a very good beer, probably would be interesting to cellar a few. But there might be some complexity missing for the really top grade.

Bottle. Pours black with a small but very dark brown head. Aroma is of dark to burnt roasted malts, thick dark chocolate, a touch smoky, a boozy brandy kind of thing going on as well. Flavour is dark roast malts, caramel, chocolate, fruity, a tart fruitiness that has a port-like quality. The body is full and oily, quite an alcoholic finish but who gives a shit, it works. I daresay Odin wouldnít object to a couple of bottles of this sloshing around in his horn.
