COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Røyk Uten Ild (Smoke Without Fire) is our smoky beer, here we have tried to make a beer as smoky as we can using our smoked malt from Weiermann. We have made a fairly dark and flavourful beer. Apart from the special malt the rest of the malt bill (86%) is smoked malt. You could also say that this is a smoked wheat beer, because we have used our wheat beer yeast here. The beer is not scary but actually very nice even for those that aren’t smoke beer fanatics....try it and you will see. Contains malted barley, Amarillo hops, wheat beer yeast, and lots of smoked malt from Bamberg, Germany. 8% alc, 33 ibu, 48 ebc. Serving temp 8 - 12C or 46 - 53F.

Beer has a very intriguing smokiness - less "smoked meat" like you get with most German rauchbeers and more charcoal briquet. Quite dark and fairly dry. Not off-putting, just a bit bizarre.

Bottle. Moderate aromas all around, with cereal and milk chocolate for the malt, herbs and resin for the hops, earth for the yeast and background notes of smoke, wood and brown sugar. Head is small, creamy, frothy light brown with good lacing and is mostly lasting. Color is muddy brown with a chunk or two at the bottom. Flavor starts lightly to moderately sweet and moderately acidic, then finishes lightly sweet and acidic, moderately bitter and a touch sour. Palate is on the fuller side of medium, oily with a lively carbonation and lightly astringent finish. Full and rich, and nice smokey overtones.

Very dark brown, close to black. Some head that settles down into a thin, light brown lacing on top. Scent of smoke and roasted malts. A bit like caramel cappuciino. Strong smoky aroma. Medium bitterness. Dry. Maybe some dried fruits? Quite full bodied.

(Bottle, batch #273, at Maltainen Riekko, Helsinki) When serving me the waitress said that this would be smokier than Schlekerla Märzen. Well, that wasn’t true. There was smoke and tar both in the aroma and the taste but it wasn’t really dominating. I could also sense liquorice, roastedness and fennel seeds. The last one came to me as a surprise but the flavour did fit in. No fennel seed were added according to the very minimalistic label. Aftertaste contained some metallicness which dropped the overall points a bit but otherwise good smoked beer.

Dark brown rubi colour witha tan head. Aroma of flowers, malt and some hints of wood. Very well balanced round flavour: semi sweet, light malty, lightly bitter and not so complex as you will expect from the aroma and the looks. Some dry feeling at the end, medium body. Very good beer overall.
