Røyk Uten Ild (Smoke Without Fire) is our smoky beer, here we have tried to make a beer as smoky as we can using our smoked malt from Weiermann. We have made a fairly dark and flavourful beer. Apart from the special malt the rest of the malt bill (86%) is smoked malt. You could also say that this is a smoked wheat beer, because we have used our wheat beer yeast here. The beer is not scary but actually very nice even for those that aren’t smoke beer fanatics....try it and you will see. Contains malted barley, Amarillo hops, wheat beer yeast, and lots of smoked malt from Bamberg, Germany. 8% alc, 33 ibu, 48 ebc. Serving temp 8 - 12C or 46 - 53F.

Bottle at 2nd BBF @ De Molen. Drinks like a doppelbock with smoked malts and traditional spices. Nice flavor but a slightly watery texture. Decent made brew though.

Bottle at Håndverkerstuene, batch 273. Pours black as the night with an inch creamy dark tanned head. Aroma of dark malts and nice light smoked bacon. Taste is first of all full of those dark complex malts, with a moderate smoked touch, just enough to be very interesting. Also some tar, salt and liquorice present here. Lingering medium sweet end. Lovely beer.

500 ml bottle @ Konttori.
Pours a pitch black colour with a beige frothy white head. Medium sweet on the nose with smokiness, fruits, syrup and coffee. RIch taste of roasted malts, brown sugar, smoke, syrup, chocolate and honey. Full bodied, oily to slicky mouthfeel and decent carbonation. Nice smoked beer with a warming finish.

500 ml bottle. Dark brown body with a nice, lasting tan head. Aroma has a pleasant level of smoke and bacon, not subdue nor too much. I smell a tiny hint of caramel in the background as well. Flavor is smoky of course, also fruity, bitter and slightly burnt malt. I find this beer really well made, balanced and smooth, pretty amazing considering this to be quite strong in flavor. God job!

UPDATED: APR 29, 2011 29.4.2011: Bottle (50cl) from Vinmonopolet (Vika), Oslo. Batch 294. Improvement relative to earlier rating. Head is bigger with good retention, settles as a thick film with some lacing. Aroma has better balance - sweetness is not so dominant, and a nicer finish with smoked wood and licorice. Carbonation also appears softer. 18.9.2010: Bottle (50cl) at Olympen, Oslo. Batch 273. Very dark mahogany colour, small head. Pleasant, subdued smokey, sweet malt aroma. Taste is discreetly smokey, but marred by a somewhat unpleasant sweetness, reminiscent of malt-based soft drinks (surprisingly at this ABV). Mouthfeel is lighter than expected and too fizzy, I think, for this style. Disappointment. (Ar6, Ap3, T5, P3, O12)

500ml bottle shared with Knut Albert at Olympen. Very dark in body appearance. Naked surface. Spotty lacing. Smell of smoked sausages and earthy, semi-sweet malts. Likable flavour of smoked malts nicely married with chocolate malts. Smooth dry bitterness towards the ending. Hidden alcohol. Easy to drink. Looking forward to my next bottle of this one (Oslo, 06.08.2010).
