4.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20 davidm (1775) - Melbourne, AUSTRALIA - JUN 29, 2012
Bottle from the local taphouse. Love the subtle smokiness. Aromas of chocolate, caramel, flowers, and smoke. Taste is sweet and bitter, with long length. Palate is silky, medium to full. Dark brown, with a thin head.

Bottle @ ACBF 2012: black with a tanned head, smell is heavy of smoked malts with a slight molasses sweetness to it & grapefruit, pine & fruity hops, taste is sweet molasses upfront, dark fruits & dark malts, the smoke & smoked malts are definitely there but the smoke is very balanced, harmonious & not dominating, leather followed by a subtle & well integrated grapefruit & pine resin hop kick, lovely, medium bodied, another winner from the hand brewery

Redish black colour, whit a light tan head. Perfect balance between the aromas of the ipa side and the stout side of the black ipa. Full bodied. Recommended.

Draft @ acbf. Aroma is roast, some fruit hops, malty red fruit. Flavour is roasty malt, mocca, some fruity hops. Very nice balance.

Bottle shared with ClubGonzo. Has a distinct black colour with a lovely light brown and thick head. Comfortable aromas of dark chocolate, coffee, leather, tar, hops and hints of smoke. The taste is not far away with a clearer smoke flavour and more bitter chocolate. Blackcurrant is also present. Smooth and slightly oily mouth feel. This is really a good quality beer, but maybe not quite a typical black IPA, where much of the expected hoppy touch never shows up.

0.5l bottle. Has been a while since I got the honor of trying a new Haandbryggeriet beer now, so I’m looking forward to this. The pour on this one is lovely deep deep brown - right there on the border of being black - and it has a nice big and lasting chocolate head that’s leaving big lacings down the whole glass. On the aroma this one gives me lots of fresh hops mixed with tons of fantastic rocky gunpowder, some bitter chocolate and light, but lots of, roasted malts. Also some traces of milkshake here, and it’s both salty - like the way salty dried meat smells like and a bit ashy with hints of smoke. With other words, quite interesting, no, make that really nice and very interesting on the aroma. When tasting it it feels thick and almost creamy in the mouth and it has a average carbonation level. Flavors are quite stingy and hoppy at first, but it’s also quite ashy and definitely smoky. Not so much chocolate, but now it’s more like cold coffee. When it got a bit temperated it just started tasting fantastic, and that salty-meaty-ashy-smoky thing? Just gotta love it! This is one of those beers, that when the bottle is empty, you really really just want a new one. I’m starting to think this might be the best beer I’ve ever tasted from the clever guys from Drammen! 08.03.2012
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 dexcansino (249) - Andalucía, SPAIN - MAR 24, 2013
Cerveza negra con espuma cremosa como un buen expresso. Al olfato es una ipa por sus tonos florales. En la boca es una stout cremosa, tostada, con sabor a café y chocolate. Una delicia.

500ml bottle @ Patricks. Dark brown almost black body with a nice beige head. Aroma is quite mild, dark malt and robust smoke, very pleasant but not intense. Flavor has some of the same mild/balance touch, malt, bitterness, smoke and heavy carbonation. Quite mild bitterness actually. Nice body and pleasant aftertaste. A really nice smoked ale.

500mL thanks to my Norwegian Secret Santa. Pours deep brune to fairly inky black. Large, rocky tan head. Large formation and massive lace. Woah. Nose is bitter chocolate, resiny hops, savory soy and truffle salt. No off flavor. Spicy, wet earth, smoky woods. Taste is solid: neutral, balanced. Lemon acidity and mild hop bitterness with chocolate roast. Dry, clean, aerated. Very easy to drink. Not too thick or chewy. No cheese or nuttiness. No astringency. No paper. No tannic character. Solid, easy 4.0 Black IPA. A nice surprise! The fiance loved it so, great success! Lots of smoke, very soft mouthfeel. Super fresh, this could be a knockout for style.
