Bottle picked up in Julios on the way back from a great weekend that included NotF and BBF in Boston. Pours a hazy dirty brown with a medium to large creamy beige head. Berries hidden behind oxidized old paper, moves into a slight liqueur aroma. Sweet at the start, then sort of an ugly charred berry flavor. Ugh. How did that happen? Just tastes like burnt currants. Lots of ash. Not a ton of sourness or acid, just a lot of unpleasantness. Finishes with some more paper, flat old berries, and a bit of tang with some flavors that remind me of Indian food. Well, it looked pretty at least. Shame it all had to go down the drain.

a touch funky, a touch earthy, with some cranberry shining through, but not like the Tyaettbaer(?) from Nogne O. This was decent, but not that one’s rival by any stretch.

Bottle at WTWBA. Smoke and bacon in this beer. Very interesting. Yeasty and slightly fruity. Cool beer.

Rated in 2010 (Backlog) - Cloudy orange with a decent sized off-white head. Aroma is of ash, sawdust and grass. Taste is of ash and yeast with light citrusy tartness in the finish.

Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. The look is golden in color, no head, and clear. The smell is fruit skins, grapes, very veggie like. The taste is a weird tartness, cherry, ashy, and off.

500ml bottle, batch 246, at the opening a little gush came through, cloudy orange-amber hue, with a bubbly beige head, mild wild yeasty, earthy barnyard, funky, horseblanket, leathery nose, with a musty redberry, herbal medecinal note, with a light wheaty, pale, toasty malt, wild cranberry accent in the aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with an earthy wild yeasty harsh mould-riped cranberry, sour, tart redberry, faint peat smoked, toasted, wheat malt character, with some wet woody barrel, medicinal herbal plant, fruity tannin flavor, leading towards an earthy harsh woody, cranberry, currant fruity acidic, redberry tannin finsh.

brygget i 2009, og dermed lagret i omlag 2 år. Innholder flere typer malt, og ikke minst noen regionale bær og frukter. Fin kobberrød farge i glasset. Lukter ikke veldig surt, og sursmaken er heller ikke så slående som hos mange andre surøl på det Norske markedet. Ettersmaken er sterkt preget av en rundt røyksmak, og det liker vi godt. Lagring hjalp veldig på denne.

A moderate gusher upon opening. Veiled orangey dark pink hued ale covered by a slice of white that lasts. Lightly lactic, gently flowery, mineral, very phenolic nose barely hints at the fruits this contains. Rather earthy pits, branches and... bile meet in this rather messy ale. In mouth, carbonation takes a lot of room and the beer is very dry, the fruit sugars having apparently been eaten up through and through, letting a texture that feels on the very light side for a Haandbryggeriet. They still manage to pull out very noticeable smoke flavours out of this and it is fairly complementary to the minerally fruits, but there is little else going on and some of the phenolic compounds, giving plastic and medicinal flavours a plenty, are detrimental to the enjoyment. Funny how I really love that brewery and wild beers, yet combining the two leads to a disappointment.

500mL bottle, bottled 11/24/09. Poured clear, honeyed golden with a dense beige head.. nice color to it. The aroma picked up a really unpleasant blend of musty cherries, mold, and detergent.. some currants showed up toward the back and worked well.. I still didn’t like it. The flavor opened with foot-like funk and sour cranberries, backed by odd grains that didn’t work and more not-so-tasty funkage.. peppery warmth amplified gross funk and berry tartness on the long, stomach-souring finish. Medium-bodied with low carbonation on the palate.. not ridiculously tart, but it was taxing to drink.. this was a big fail in my book.

Bottle: Poured a dirty reddish color ale with a large dirty foamy head with good retention and not much lacing – this one was real gusher when I open the bottle losing close to a third of the bottle in the sink. Aroma consists of fruity notes with some weird smoke and funky ester which makes for one of the most unique aroma. Taste is also a mix between some fruity and somewhat sweet cranberries and currant with some dominant smoked undertones and funky barnyard notes. Body is about average with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Quite a unique experience and not sure the smoked malt and fruit with the funky yeast is the best match ever or something I would wish to have on a regular basis but glad I tasted this beer.

Bottle in November of ’09, it got a bit phenolic. Pours amber with a crimson hue. Aroma brings wild yeast and a tad bit of nuttiness. The flavor of the wild yeast dominates as well not leaving much cranberry or currants after three years in the bottle. Not very tart or sour, more like the band-aid wild yeast flavor that has evolved in the bottle.
