Ernest (6905) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - MAR 20, 2015
Bottle (BB June 2015). Head is initially small, frothy, light brown, mostly diminishing. Body is medium amber. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (caramel, toasted grain), trace hops (flowers), with a light note of cardboard / walnut shells. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, watery/oily texture, lively carbonation, lightly to moderately alcoholic. Pretty disappointing...almost no aroma, and even a little oxidation despite being 3 months away from the BB date (although it wouldn’t be surprising if they used a one-year BB date, which would be dumb of course). A bit sourish in the mouth too, so this doesn’t have much to offer as-is. Yet another example of why brewers should use *bottling* dates, not BB dates...they are almost always way too optimistic.

Aroma is caramel, unique graininess and lager yeast. The flavor is caramel, complex grains/malts, mild sweetness and a warming/slightly sour finish. The unfiltered part made it a little different, a very good bock.

headless red ale, candyish aroma with some dark fruits and some maltyness... thickish, sweet, a bit of bitterness in the finish, very low on carbs

500 ml bottle into tulip glass, best before 6/2015. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy deep ruby red/copper color with a 2 finger dense light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of raisin, plum, fig, apple, caramel, toast, brown sugar, brown bread, light chocolate, herbal, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Nice aromas with good complexity and solid balance of dark/bready malt and fruity yeast notes; with good strength. A bit too much fruity/ester notes in the aromas. Taste of big caramel, toffee, toast, brown sugar, brown bread, light nuttiness, light chocolate, plum, fig, herbal, and yeast /toasted earthiness. Light earthy herbal bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toffee, toast, brown sugar, brown bread, light chocolate/nuttiness, plum, fig, and herbal/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice robustness, complexity, and balance of dark/bready malt and light-moderate dark fruit flavors; with a nice malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very smooth, creamy, and fairly bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with a small warming lingering after the finish. Overall this is a very nice doppelbock style. All around good balance, complexity, and robustness of dark/bready malt and light-moderate dark fruit flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

PorterPounder (6535) - Tallahassee, Florida, USA - FEB 16, 2015
Tallahassee, Fl - Market Square Liquors - 500 ml flip-top bottle. Pours a murky dark orange to brown with a quickly fading bubbly off-white head. Aroma has some bubble gum accents, a touch of booze and a hint of yeast. Chewy flavor with some molasses, dates, bubble gum and some raisin bread. Mouthfeel is thick enough, Pretty solid tasting, just lacking in some other respects. Good winter warmer.

500ml bottle. Kind of odd amber-orange color. Soda like fast dissipating head. Deep burnt caramel, not very appealing. I get the feeling they make crap one-offs just to sell to the US. Sweet, has some malt depth, but just doesn’t come off as natural to me, sort of a factory feel, thinnish in ways you’d hope it wasn’t. Suppose this one wasn’t that shelf stable. Not that impressive of an offering, but I still enjoy the style, so it works for me on some levels.

500 mL swingtop. Hazy light brown with a thin white head. Banana, clove, malts and honey. Taste is sweet and dry. Lighter body with a light sticky feel.
