At the Esplanada Bier Markt in Toronto, Hacker put on a big Oktoberfest bash. They gave away free mugs, paraded out the roast pig and sauerkraut, and flew in a handful of kegs of the Oktoberfest Lager, which is normally only found at the Oktoberefest in Munich. (Shhh...don't tell the dozens of people over at Beer Advocate who've all rated the Marzen under the Lager listing by mistake!). Golden colour, robust foam. Light aroma - some toasty notes. Crackerlike maltiness, with a little complexity contributed by pale Munich or Vienna malts. No hop aroma or flavour, but a little bit of dryness in the finish. No caramel, unlike the Marzen. Unfortunately, this confirms what I've heard about the Oktoberfest beers at the actual Oktoberfest being bland pale lagers rather than the robust Marzens that are sent overseas. Nice to get to try it, but the Marzen is the better beer.

On tap at Pub Italia. Golden coloured with lacing white head. Sweet perfumey malt in aroma, with light soapy hops. In mouth, crisp biscuity malts, with faint german hops, lacking in character. Hohum beer.

Also @ the BierMarkt in Toronto. On the sweet side for such a light coloured lager. Thought I detected some fruity notes in the flavour. Aroma was fairly subtle.

Bottle, shared with my wife over smokey ham and white bean soup. Medium gold with an airy, bubbly white head that retains beautifully. Crisp, with grains and fresh hay and fruity nuances. Ends with a bitter note. We both liked it.

[758-20071013] Tap @ West 50 (Mississauga, ON). Very faint aroma has hints of banana yeast. Clear, pale yellow body with a quick foamy white head. Bland yeasty flavour has a weird straw characteristic. Light body is kind of watery. Mediocre.

From a huge 2 liter bottle at Q-Brick’s Oktoberfest. Slightly dark blonde color. Rich pilsner malt aroma. Ok flavor of malt, grass, and a bit of cardboard. Nice but not all that special. I like their Oktoberfest Marzen much more.
