Light copper colour, slightly skunky aroma. Nutty malt flavour, hints of caramel, smooth mouthfeel, and a clean finish. Not as good as the classic fest beer examples of Paulaner and Ayinger.
4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 rboerger99 (4) - USA - JAN 9, 2002 does not count
This is a beer that is much better on tap than out of the bottle. These ratings reflect the tap version, which outshines Paulaner, Spaten, and the rest by a good margin.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Ernest (5187) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - JAN 2, 2002
UPDATED: OCT 5, 2007 Bottle (Jun 07 production). Head is initially average sized, frothy, off-white, mostly diminishing. Body is clear medium amber. Aroma is moderately malty (toasted bread, caramel), moderately hoppy (flowers, honey), with a note of minerals. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Very solid, but safe; not adventurous. Very German-smelling (not to sound obvious, but it has that distinct "German aroma" that is so hard to replicate). Gotta love the Hallertauer. It would be very easy to drink a liter or two of this.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 blatz (138) - Palm Beach Gardens, FL, Florida, USA - DEC 21, 2001
Above average but not great - Paulaner or Spaten over this one -- not enough roasty malt flavor for me -- gets better after the first few sips but it lacks in body and fullness of tastes.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Heat99 (56) - Austin, Texas, USA - DEC 2, 2001
Sweet roasty aroma. Clear amber color that pours a great, but quickly dissipating head. Sweet flavors of malt, light hints of fruit, and perfect hop balance. Excellent marzen.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Aurelius (3146) - Tallahassee, Florida, USA - NOV 27, 2001
Creamy head that doesn’t stand. Nice ruby amber color. Yeasty-alcohol nose. More bitter than sweet, but the sweet flavor builds as you go back, probably because the hop flavor clings. A good beer, but a little thin perhaps. I preferred Paulaner Oktoberfest slightly for the same money. Still, it’s a good sipping or pizza beer.

Full flavor, full body, not too hoppy or bitter

great full flavored oktoberfest. not too hoppy, just right. EXCELLENT flavor.
3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 PhillyBeer2112 (2361) - Oviedo, Florida, USA - NOV 2, 2001
UPDATED: OCT 11, 2003 Very good example. I hear alot that this is the best of the Munich OFests - but I'd have to say I still prefer the others. This did have a nice toffeeish flavor though - with slight toasted and burnt caramel notes. Excellent dark amber color and noticeable alcohol warming, which is borderline detracting from drinkability. Primary drawback is a slightly heavy palate. Caramelized toasty munich malts border on cloying in this example. Under-attenuated? A little darker than some Ofests, too.
3.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 Drew Blood (151) - Mt.Prospect, Illinois, USA - OCT 31, 2001
A nice beer, very dry with a good balance of hops to smoked malt. Beautiful in the glass. Not as full bodied as I would like but a tender creaminess that made me happy.
