It is beacuse there is such a precise balance hiding behind those sweet malts up front. Nothing is pushed forward with out an equally forceful counter step, whther it is the dry body that follows the caramal sweet nose, or the strong finishing note following the surprisingly light-footed body. I wonder why the American craft versions rate higher than this precisely crafted version. They show off more I guess. This is a beer on a lie detector: nothing but the truth. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Sep 16, 2005 On tap at JPs (?), at least the tap said so. Anyway, pours a hazy orange with a thin body. Aroma is sweet caramel and malt. Flavor is sweet like a dopplebock, but the weight is lighter than the aforementioned style. Heavy tones of sugar, mollasses, and malt, with a nice cotton candy finish. Palate is smooth and coating. This is a great beer, one that I hope to have over and over again. reggiekoko (10), saint augustine, Florida, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 18, 2007 A big bold coppery malty marzen. I really enjoyed this one. It had a nice off-white head with lots of lacing until the finish. This is my favorite Octoberfest beer. labologist (55), Bramhall, England
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Feb 13, 2007 Bottle (2005 version). A copper coloured Oktoberfest beer brewed in the traditional Marzen style. I ahve found each year that there are differences in depth of flavour. This beer I consider to be the best of the 2005 Oktoberfest beers. A well balanced malty flavour with a long finish. VitaminR (449), Colorado, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Oct 4, 2009 Intense malty fig nose, Orangey brown color, medium long lasting soapy head. Perfectly balanced rich caramel maltiness and restrained, but effective hop bitterness. Medium to high carbonation, medium body, rich mouth feel, bright fruity malty finish. All around one of the best Oktoberfest beers, has great balance, depth of flavor--well crafted. Underhook (162), Lincoln Park, New Jersey, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Sep 6, 2008 Smells malty, cereal. Doughy, yeasty. Pours beatiful reddish brown with a thick creamy head. Cloudy with normal carbonation. Tastes fabulous, light and sweet with a strong bready, woody, yeasty taste. Superb example of what a marzen should be. Easily the best I’ve ever had.
