Really mashy, but light, malts in the aroma. Not quite stodgy though. Fairly pale orange. Taste continues the aroma, and the finish continues the taste. It’s light malts everywhere. Nice, but not particularly sophisticated. Phil was blitzed by this stage, and we didn’t write numbers down, but somehow (i.e. Anna) managed to get a review on paper, so points might not be so totally accurate. (Unlike points I give usually, they’re always spot on, first time.)

Ins Glas ergießt sich ein dunkelgoldenes Bier mit geringer Schaumkrone. Geruch sehr malzig, würzig, leicht fruchtig. Geschmack malzig fruchtig, getreidig, leichte Bitterkeit.

Flip-top bottle: Deep golden coloured, mid-sized white head, quickly diminishing; malty and cardboardy nose; sweetish-malty flavour, relatively light bodied for a beer of 6.0%; short sweet-bitter finish. A boring, poor brew.......

Bottled - Criterion Leicester. An old gold coloured beer with a pool of tan head and lots of bubbles. The aroma is sweet and malty and typical of the style. The taste is sweet and a little fruity with some apple flavours. No great shakes but acceptable.

(swing top bottle) Clear, golden colour with a fluffy white foam. Mild, moderately sweet malty, slightly grainy aroma with herbal hops. Sweet-bitter flavour, medium to light bodied, although it has 6 % ABV, which reminds me of an European Strong Lager, also with a quite soft carbonation. Slightly toasted malty taste with herbal notes; moderately dry malty, light bitter and short finish with hints of alcohol. Mediocre Festbier.

UPDATED: NOV 4, 2004 (quite aged sample, rating for the older 7% Bock version, not the current 6%) Pale amber, with greenish shine, thin off-white head. Very nutty, oxydized nose. Dry portwine, if that can be imagined. Dull, nutty tasting beer. Strange butter-like flavour, but not linked to diacetyl. Thinnish texture, but slick, oily mouthfeel. Obviously this beer has aged too much. Which is surprising, annoying even for a 7.0% ABV Bock.
