3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 bartlebier (523) - Baden-Württemberg, GERMANY - MAY 10, 2013
33cl bottles from Bierpost. Brewed 2012, BB 12/2013 - This to me is Hopfenstopfers secret stand-out beer, unfairly categorised and judged as a pilsner, while actually brewed with 7 types of malt and homegrown German hops as a kind of bottom-fermenting South German ale. Mouthfeel and taste are very satisfying on account of layered biscuit malts, almost chewy and rich, reminding me of the malt profile of UK Pale ales like Samuel Smith Pale Ale and even the caramalt+hopforward profile of Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA. Very generously hopped with herbal, peppery and assertive EU hops (Saphir and Taurus?), interplaying harmoniously and providing a satisfying round taste profile in accord with the rich malt back. Unique in the German brewing landscape, maybe save Düsseldorf, and worth seeking out.
