4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle delivers a murky gold hue with a fairly quickly receding white head. Nose finds a piney citrus and sweet maltyness, hints of brown sugar and spice. The Mouth finds flavors of biter maltyness, spicy hops with a hint of piney notes. The Finish; I find the balance very palatable, more flavors come out as the beer warms. Very nice beer, it’s what I would expect from Hair of the Dog!

3.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap, poured into a stemmed tulip sampler. Tropical sweet citrus notes of banana, pineapple, and orange strike the nose with some light floral hints. It’s a murky, dull yellow brown color with a sudsy white head and a white medium thin ring with a dusty surface. It leaves behind a light speckled lacing. The taste is a nicely balanced, medium sweet and bitter. The beer has a slick, waxy texture with a medium full body and an above average, fizzy carbonation. The palate starts juicy and sweet with a grainy middle, then a bitter, peel finish with some spice and resin. It’s crisp and dry with a fairly strong citrus peel aftertaste.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from HOTD, drank at home. Very hazy (almost opaque) burnt orange, thin off-white head. Super-sweet aroma of oranges and light caramel, some grapefruit, some grass. Tastes moderate sweet toffee caramel and then quite big bitterness, plenty of grapefruit citrus, some floral, some grass, some almost savoury onion notes (summit maybe?), not unpleasant. Bit of peppery dryness afterwards, quite subtle. Quite soft carbonation, just a little prickle at the start of each mouthful then dies down. Medium-full body, quite thick texture, a bit slick. Pretty good, but not quite as good as hoped, given this brewery’d reputation.

T: Bitter and bready sweet - an exemplar of the style.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
"bottled Fall ’08, sampled 3/09. poured like your average ipa, maybe a bit more bubbly than usual. this one is only 7%...more like a regular ipa than an imperial, but the thin body is made up for with an intense dry hoppy aroma from a generous hopping, and rye malt. nice touch, there. very dry, bitter, and intense. well balanced with the pilsner and rye malt as well. if the body was a bit fuller, this would be one of my favorites."

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Poured from 22 oz bottle into weizenbeer glass.
Aroma: Tons of pine in the aroma, plus some grapefruit.
Appearance: Slightly cloudy, golden hue, not much head on it.
Taste: Nice piney hops, with a decent shot of sweet malt in the finish. Some citrus and spicy notes.
Palate: Low carbonation, thick but not oily.
Overall: Really enjoyed this one. One of my favorite double IPAs.

3.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Serving: bottle. Bordering on cloudy amber gold pour. Ah, the smell of a west coast IPA. Plenty of orange yest, star fruit, and other tropical notes. The taste is subdued compared to the nose. There is a nice tropical bitterness with caramel malt and toast notes. Lingering finish. Solid.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Weird-looking DIPA--ruddy brown dirty color, good lacing, opaque. Aroma is very fruity--taste has a roasty toasty afterbody, malted but differently than some (probably the rye). Tastes stronger than 7%, but I didn’t notice the grapefruit/citrus tastes, but lots of bitterness. Anyway-- very decent beer, strong persistent mouthfeel, and a lot of strength.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Typically American double IPA but with rye malt. Firm and stable, snow white head, colour misty orange blonde. Citrussy hop aroma, bitter honey, pine needles, peach, dried apricot, flowers. Taste at first with a soft maltiness, bit caramelly, fresh citrus and other fruit notes, complex, finishing powerfully yet very elegantly hoppy, with a long, complex bitterness. Excellent example of its style, I love this brewery.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bomber received in trade. Thank you StefanSD! Spring 2014 ”vintage”. Pours very hazy deep yellow with a rather thin frothy white head that leaves a small trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is very fruity with crackers, pink grapefruit juice, lychee, ripe gooseberries, freshly cut grass, pine needles, cape gooseberries, black currant leaves, resinous wood, lemon balm, dill, orange zest and mango. Taste is bitter and fruity with crackers, moist grass, ripe gooseberries, dew-covered black currant leaves, lychee, pine needles, grapefruit rinds, orange zest, lemon zest, resinous wood and hints of dried juniper berries and alcohol. Mouthfeel is soft, round, tiny astringent, dry, very tiny boozy and medium to full bodied. Finish is bitter and fruity with crackers, moist grass, gooseberries, grapefruit rinds, cape gooseberries, lychee, pineapple, mango, resinous wood, orange zest and lemon zest. Very different from the other HotD beers I’ve tried so far but this brewery keeps on impressing and shows they know how a solid IIPA should taste too.
