3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Small sample from bottle @ Zeebra II. Pours hazy copper coloured with a medium white head. Aroma is quite sweet with bourbon, caramel, dark fruits and malts. Taste has raisins, dark fruits, some caramel and a medium bitter finish. Medum body and carbo. Quite nice for a barley wine.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
12 oz bottles, 2011 & 2012. Cloudy brown with sparse froth; the 2012 kicks up a nice head with a stiff pour. For the 2011, nose is overripe peach and plum, brown sugar and stale sherry. The 2012 is much fresher caramel, raisin and bourbon. The 2011 is almost completely flat, slightly sticky medium body. The 2012 the same but with adequate carb. Taste is caramel, bourbon and wood with the 2011 version adding notes of spoiled dark fruit and musty oak. I don’t mind the lack of carb in the 2011 but the oxidation just ruins the taste. For me this would be a 6-3-6-2-15 = 3.2. The 2012 exhibits beautiful bourbon barrel aging perfectly complimenting the base Fred.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
2013 bottle. Murky brownish-orange color with a minimal off-white head that disappears quickly to a sparse outer ring. Spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma of bourbon, dark fruit and caramel malt. Full-bodied and slightly syrupy with an oaky bourbon character and flavors of vanilla, caramel malt, dark fruit and brown sugar. The finish is boozy with a raisin and dark malt aftertaste. Good beer all around.

3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle at home. Pour is viscous golden brown with no head - doesn’t look like there is any carbonation in this one. Huge bourbon, coconut, oaky, mapley, figgy, raisins, caramelly, and toffee in the aroma. Taste is coconut caramels, toffee, toasted wood, oak, earthy, grapefruit, prunes, and golden raisins with a hint of alcohol on the backend. Slick mouthfeel with no carbonation. The flavors are there and it’s incredibly smooth for 12%, but the complete lack of carboantion kills the experience for me.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle courtesy of Kermis. Big thanks. Poured a murky dark brown with a whispy off-white head. The aroma is big wood, boozy bourbon alcohol, sweet fruit. The flavour is moderate sweet, light bitter with a rich chewy sweet, caramel malt, alcoholic, woody palate. Medium to full bodied with soft carbonation. Looked awful but tasted great in small quantities.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle shared. Pours murky golden brown with no real head. I’m getting
massive wood from the aroma, along with the bourbon coming out strong, vanilla, toffee and sweet overripe dark fruit. Flavour is heavy sweet and moderate to heavy bitter. Probably the most woody beer I’ve had, so strong in the palate too. Full bodied with soft carbonation. Super thick and chewy mouthfeel. This is true beer geek beer, I would never want to drink a whole bottle by myself, but really enjoyable to share in a tasting. It’s like being in a caramel bourbon forest.
