Dave is an English Barley Wine. This beer was produced in 1994, and won first place at the 1998 Toronado Barley Wine Festival. The strength was achieved by taking 300 gallons of Adam and freezing it three times, leaving only 100 gallons. Always used as a teaching aid, it was produced to show people that Beer could be more than what they had experienced, and continues to do that today.

Tasted at Kans place brought by Jason - thanks my friend! A deep brown beer with no head. Vinous aroma with plenty of caramel, mocha, dark malt and a nice alcohol sensation. Like a good dessert wine, strong and powerfull yet balanced. Flavor is dominated by cocoa with a dry mouthfeel like cocoa powder. Strong and vinous and rather sweet of course but not over the top. Like a good liquor, extremely smooth. I sense some apricot and a salty hint in there as well. No doubt an insane beer and if it is 29% or not I don’t know, but it feels at least as heavy as Utopias. A great experience!

8000th rating. Bottle split 9 ways with the RBSG crew at HOTD. Pours brown with no head. The aroma is strong booze, fig, raisin, wood, soy sauce. Thick mouth, boozy, raisin, caramel, gets better as it warms, very little oxidation, held up well, very nice.

Bottle 375ml. clear glass @ [ madmitch76 - 20K Tasting ] - chriso & Boudicca House, London.

[ As Hair of the Dog Dave ].
[ Vintage 1994 ]. Clear dark brown color with virtually no head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, bread, caramel, sweet malt, alcohol, moderate roasted, chocolate. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet with a long long duration, bread, roasted - chocolate, sweet malt, alcohol - boozy. A great experience to try this one. Body is medium to full, texture is oily - creamy, carbonation is flat, finish feel is moderate alcoholic. Fairly drinkable, the malt sweetness is good balanced by the alcohol booze. [20160115]

Bottle shared at Kenny’s 20k tasting - London. A big cheers to Ken, one of RateBeer’s most generous members, who fittingly shared this beer with the group. Pours unclear, deep brown with no head. The nose is lightly roasty, with definite notes of alcohol, dried dark fruits and scorched earth. Big sweet flavour, a little ashy, with more old and dried out dark fruits, some berries, faint cocoa, rich alcohol. Full bodied and fairly chewy, with soft carbonation. Hot on the finish with further earthy bitterness, leathery fruits, touches of toffee. Good stuff overall. It may have once been worthy of being one of RB’s highest-rated beers, but at this point it’s just a pretty good barley wine. That said, it has held up reasonably well over the years. Thanks again to Ken for the opportunity to try this one!

Bottle share at Ken’s 20k tasting. Many thanks to Madmitch "Ahab" 76 for providing this whale of a beer. Pours a dark brown with very minimal head and little carbonation. Aroma of leather, tobacco, fruit cake and a little booze. Warming feel and all sorts of tastes going on with the fruit cake, leather, tobacco and a little fudge plus many others. Really glad to have the opportunity to try this complex beer. Cheers Ken. Here’s to sharing 25k!

Bottle split at Madmitch76 20K tasting, massive thanks to the ever generous Ken for supplying this juan, 15/01/16. Light black with a moderately appointed tan covering that dissipates to edgeing. Nose carries a big dollop of malt, light smoke, chocolate, bourbon infuse, burnt treacle toffee, raisens, stewed dark fruit rinds. Taste drops away a touch from the nose, dark fruit compote, light smoke, dates, fruit cake, tinged with oxidisation, black forest gateaux, molasses, tobacco, vinous. Full bodied, slick feel, warming alcohol in the close. Great to try and not bad at all age considered, has held up well, oxidisation is light. ABV is well masked, though will have dropped away, barrelling subtle ...see ABV. Great to tre this beast and glad to have done so now and not in a few years time !

Generously provided by Ken/Madmitch at his 20K tasting- 15th Jan 2016. Pours dark brown with no head. Aroma is slightly meaty/sweet soy sauce. Taste is sweet figs, raisins, bourbon. Mouthfeel is oily with a hint of carbonation. Lots of warming booziness but still quite drinkable. Light oxidation. This was better than I expected considering the age etc. A real treat to be able to try it. Cheers Kenny!

The 20K beer for 20K Kenny thanks to the main man himself. Congratulations! Exceptionally generous of him! It pours darkest brown with no head whatsoever. The nose is rich malts, meaty, umami, oily, chocolate, vanilla, dark fruits, chewy, unctuous, fudge, alcohol, fruit cake and toasted coconut. The taste is rich, oily, chewy malt, warming heat, meaty, Marmite, toasted stuff, raw alcohol, slick, umami, plum, raisin, fig, some oxidisation and some spicy Worcestershire sauce on the back-end. Finish is warming and spiced. Full body and oily, slick mouth-feel. Warms yer cockles that’s for sure. Rich, oily and warming. Not quite the best beer ever, but great fun to try. Thanks!

Many thanks to the ever-generous Kenny for sharing this rarity as his 20K beer. As ’Hair of the Dog Dave’, bottled 1994. Black, very little head, leaves legs on the glass. The aroma is meaty, OXO cubes, chocolate, plastic, dirt and booze. Body is medium to full, oily and smooth. Taste is dry palate-stripping booze, spice, oil, dirt. Dry, spicy and boozy all over but not showing as much alcohol as you’d expect at 29%. A great experience to try this one. Holding up very well at 22 years old.
