snakeoilpete (324), Seattle, Washington, USA Jan 25, 2009 2008 Bottle. Nice mostly clear reddish orange color, but head/carbonation is so nonexistent, I wonder if something went wrong here. Nose is fruity and hoppy, but not very strong. Good viscous mouthfeel, but a LITTLE more carbonation would be nice. I hope I’m not crucifying a bad bottle for this. Strong strawberry sweetness is mostly balanced by the hoppy bitterness- pretty good. Pastor (509), Maine, USA Jan 24, 2009 I almost had to cry I went to put this 2005 vintage bottle that thethrone sent me in the cellar for another day and heard it hissing so I quickly chilled it down and poured it into a snifter that was a close one. We did have a gusher, so I won’t get to much into the appearance, big tan head hazy apple cider colored yes floaties as well good thing I like Belgians. My score reflects giving it the benefit of the doubt
But the aromas made up for the whole gusher moment one of the best Barleywine noses I have ever had the pleasure of drinking. Sweet caramel, wait is this a melted sugar daddy ;-) toffee, candy sugar, fruity as well
A nice sweet sipper even more enjoyable as the glass goes on. the flavors folow the nose to a T. The warmth of the alcohol is still present and helps this brew from being to coy. This barleywine is medium in the mouth and sticky on the tongue.
I must say some of the brews I have had on my want list I have tried and thought wow that was a waste of space. This is not one of them, this brew is truly a must try for any barleywine fiend. Thanks again Adam, I didn’t plan on drinking this tonight but I am glad I did. Drinkability that is answered simply by saying I want more
rmalloy (195), los angeles, California, USA Jan 23, 2009 Really delicious. Pours a thick, cloudy honey color--inelegant but distinctive. Piney, grapefruity aroma. Tastes like prunes, figs, green apple, bright citrus, and pine in a honey/brown sugar sauce. 17thfloor (1403), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jan 21, 2009 2008 bottle. Pours a very clear glowing dark deep blood red with a slight orange tint, no bubbles, with a very small frothy white head. Strong fresh hop aroma, spicy, perfumy, floral, fruity, stingy fresh citrus nose, sweeter red fruits, with an toasted malt undertone. I assume fresh this is best served a bit on the cooler side because of the hops. Strong hop forward first taste, turning dry, pretty bitter, salty and toasty before finishing with a touch of honey and hint of brown sugar. Doesn’t seem quite as complex as other HOTD’s however the flavors are definitely of the same quality. Really quite dry despite its obvious high gravity. Unbelievably smooth and somehow creamy body, super fine soft carbonation that fluffs up a malty beer that otherwise would seem syrupy. I have 3 other bottles for some age comparison. [Pour slowly as I had a considerable amount of yeast ruin the last 3 oz or so of my beer] ilovedarkbeer (1326), Dallas, Texas, USA Jan 20, 2009 Bottle thanks to BMan1113VR. Almost no head. Orange reddish hazy colored body. Nose is citrus, pink grapefruit, red wine, and alcohol. Smells pretty dang good. Taste is carmel, butterscotch, dark corn syrup (think popcorn balls), very sweet but finishes with a bitter kick. Mouthfeel is nice and sticky and the finish is long. Nice effort. sebletitje (1880), Tampa, Florida, USA Jan 18, 2009 courtesy of goodzoid10.
Pure goodness, ber is amazing from start to finish. Bets enjoyed at somewhat close to room temperature.
Pours clear brown - amber with tan head and lingering lacing.
Aroma is loaded with good hops, light sugary - honey notes, citrus-grapefruit fruits, caramel.
Where the whole charm of this beer comes to life is in its taste.
All the hops come together with the malts for an amazing experience. All is terrifically well balanced.
The bitter hops is balanced out with the hops and the sweet addition of honey - brown sugar, making this beer an extremely smooth and sweet beer.
Some floating sediments in the bottom. Beer could just get better with age.
Hophead22 (1056), Redlands, by way of Wisconsin,, California, USA Jan 11, 2009 12oz, 2006 vintage. Dark amber pour with very little head, lots of yeast stuck on the bottom of this bottle as well. Sweet, malty aroma. Flavor is muck the same, pretty good. msante79 (784), Orland Hills, Illinois, USA Jan 10, 2009 2006 12oz bottle. Thanks to kegbear for this brew. Pours murky reddish brown with no head. Aroma is sweet malt, hops, brown sugar and some booze. Flavor is sweet malt, dark fruits, hops, brown sugar, booze. Mouthfeel is flat. Finishes sticky and sweet like HoTD Fred and DFH 120. I liked this better than Fred but still not my favorite barleywine. It has a nice complexity but I prefer a thicker mouthfeel and more carbonation.
