4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
On tap @ Hair of the Dog, Portland. Vertical tasting of 2009, 2011 and 2012 vintages. Pours hazy dark brown with a finger thick head. Aroma is very fruity and bitter, with orange peel and apricots, as well as some notes of grapefruit. Full body with soft carbonation. Flavour is bitter with apricots, orange peel and lots of fruitiness coming together in a long sweet but bitter finish. The 2009 keeps amazingly well, and surprisingly enough comes off as the most hop accentuated. Still not too much difference over the years, and it’s really just a consistent and superb brew.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
2011 Bottle // Purchased Feb 2012 // Sampled October 2013
Deep ruby tinted body with a rich amber, copper and brown body, all with a nice, single centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of amazingly complex scotch, malt, vanilla, oak, brown sugar, bourbon, metal and tons of pit fruits - very nice and ridiculously complex for a smell - even for the style. Full-bodied; Deep dense toasted malt flavours, coupled with tons of hops (still noticeable after 2+ years), earthy and deeply bittering brown sugar and caramel, some pit fruits with a little coffee flavour and a rich, dry, oaky and pine flavour that lasts quite a while. Aftertaste really brings out the complexity with malt, caramel and toffee really showing through with a good hoppy flavour showing some bitterness for a well-rounded flavour. Overall, a great barley wine and one well worth saving - even for 5+ years, it will only get better for the foreseeable future. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in Tustin, California on 08-February-2012 for US$5.49 sampled at home in Washington on 28-October-2013 in celebration of running the USMC Marathon here at home in Arlington.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours is hazy brown with almost no carbonation but its not that big of a deal in that case. Smell has some grapefruits, a bit piney, dark fruits and caramel. Taste follows on the same path with some sherry, burnt sugar, toffee. Palate is heavy, a bit sweet but not cloying. A full bodied Barleywine that became one of my favorites non-barrel aged. Definitly a sipper.

4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Good barley wine that held up well as this was a 2011 bottle. Sweet malt and hoppy aroma. Nice deep coppery brown color with a small head. Higher than average weight and mild carbonation. Nice blend of flavors from sweet bready malts to toffee and caramel with a high bittering finish. Alcohol was there but not overpowering. Great sit back and enjoy beer.

2011 bottle. Brouwers, WA.
Barleywine to the tee. Chewy caramel, hops are light, citrus.
So so clean. Fruity, light sherry notes.
Very impressed with how smooth it is.

4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a nice deep amber colour, clear with a creamy tan head. Aroma is of caramel with subtle hop notes and some toasted barley. Taste is more sweet than bitter, but is quite balanced. Full-medium body, softer carbonation and syrupy on the palate. Overall a strong barley wine.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
2011 12 ounce bottle. Pours a darker ruby with a big beige head of foam. Really nice retention. The aroma has a big nutty, caramel, toffee, ginger, resin, and brown sugar. The taste is huge sweetness with a hoppy bitterness that leaves me thinking this was a big hop bomb at some point. Damn, now I want a fresh bottle to know if it was. Sticky and chewy mouthfeel.

4.8 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
On tap at Hair of the Dog (2012 batch). Hazy red, white lacing. Beautiful cand-sweet aroma of fruity hops and dark fruit. Strawberry, citrus fruits, and a gorgeous malt profile in the taste... wow. Silky smooth body. This one blew me away. Best barley wine I’ve tasted so far, and my favourite from Hair of the Dog.

On tap at the brewery. 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2012 vintages side by side I believe. Caramel colored and hazy ranging from light to dark. Malty and sweet aroma with spicy hops and honey. Similar flavor with light alcohol and a full body.
