3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle, hooked up at Holiday Wine Cellars, Escondido CA. Pours a hazy brownish red color, with a medium head. Flavor is dense and sweet, heavy malt forward, ripe fruits, honey, and residual sugars. Heavily hopped on the back end with notes of resiny spruce and citrus. Full bodied, lingering sweetness and a hint of alcohol on the back end. Although the hops are minty fresh, it seems that this beer would benefit from a bit of aging to mellow out the sweetness a bit. Still solid.

2012 bottle. I am not a huge fan of barley wines. I first tried this on tap at the brewery last year and I loved it. I bought a bottle and have been cellaring it since, trying hard to forget i have it. I broke down today and drank it. Amazing brew! I wish I had more. Super sweet, smooth, and just a hint of boozey burn.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
2013 on tap at brewery.
A: Full creme colored head with a warm brown body.
N: Forward malt with a good amount of honey and hops. Some brown sugar and toffee. Brittle.
T: Peppery and hoppy. Less sweetness in the veins. Has a bite, but is well rounded overall.
M: Sticky and medium bodied. Very nice carbonation.
O: Drifting towards a strong ale, but still well done. One of the best recent vintages fresh.

Flavor is fruity and moderately sweet. Big alcohol punch but itís not in the flavor at all. Awesome beer. A real masterpiece. Very very smooth.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
On tap @ Hair of the Dog, Portland. Vertical tasting of 2009, 2011 and 2012 vintages. Pours hazy dark brown with a finger thick head. Aroma is very fruity and bitter, with orange peel and apricots, as well as some notes of grapefruit. Full body with soft carbonation. Flavour is bitter with apricots, orange peel and lots of fruitiness coming together in a long sweet but bitter finish. The 2009 keeps amazingly well, and surprisingly enough comes off as the most hop accentuated. Still not too much difference over the years, and itís really just a consistent and superb brew.
