2013 bottling picked up today at Home Brew Stuff in Garden City... Paid a pretty expensive $7... but oh well, probably not going to see them at any other stores.
Thankfully the new batch shows no overt carbonation problems (neither dead flat or explosively carbonation)... Pours with a 2 finger khaki head atop a fairly clear deep cherry wood brew... nice lacing.
Nose is pretty nice.. toasty malt and malty wort.. bright citrus hoppiness... Pretty pungent hops with warmth... I like this vintage.
Flavor mirrors the aroma but with a light punch of yeasty frutiness that makes me think of apricot.. light caramel and stone fruits.. rummy but in a good way.. big American hops.. but still there is an earthy hop component.
Body is lightly viscous but ever present yet creamy carbonation.. a sipper but I will always want another drink. Very fine.
Crap... I frequently pass on cellaring Doggie Claws because of the random QC issues... This batch is in the cross-hairs right now.... but will it stay there?

2012 bottle. I am not a huge fan of barley wines. I first tried this on tap at the brewery last year and I loved it. I bought a bottle and have been cellaring it since, trying hard to forget i have it. I broke down today and drank it. Amazing brew! I wish I had more. Super sweet, smooth, and just a hint of boozey burn.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
2013 on tap at brewery.
A: Full creme colored head with a warm brown body.
N: Forward malt with a good amount of honey and hops. Some brown sugar and toffee. Brittle.
T: Peppery and hoppy. Less sweetness in the veins. Has a bite, but is well rounded overall.
M: Sticky and medium bodied. Very nice carbonation.
O: Drifting towards a strong ale, but still well done. One of the best recent vintages fresh.

Wow, what a drink! So smooth! This is one to sip slowly with a friend and share for an hour. On tap at the Hair of the Dog brewpub. Aroma is sweet and fruity. Light head without much lacing. Flavor is fruity and moderately sweet. Big alcohol punch but it’s not in the flavor at all. Awesome beer. A real masterpiece. Very very smooth.
