CheersMate1 (766), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Dec 25, 2008 VERY carbonated. This thing exploded all over me when I opened it, booh! Too carbonated, if you ask me. I have never seen a head like this one. This head does not go away! A very strange looking color, but unique. Wow, very malty aroma. Nice candy and malt aroma. I do not know what else to say about this beer, but it smells great. Slight alcohol aroma. Very pungent. Not as thick as I would like. Very alcoholic/hoppy/malty. The carbonation destroys the palate, if you ask me. This beer is nice, but overrated. I do not know. I think it is nice, but it is too carbonated. The beer is nice, but jeez I hate to be the asshole. It is similar to the Terrapin Gamma Ray. Not what I expected. 17thfloor (1402), Chicago, Illinois, USA Dec 24, 2008 Batch 71. Pours a barely unclear burnt orange with a slight red tint, no bubbles, but a very lively off-white sudsy head. Very sweet juicy aroma, pineapple and brown sugar, alcohol, some creamy butter, light toffee, light marshmallow, candied rye malt and some other tropical fruits. First taste is quite sugary, slightly burnt toffee, very rich, toasted marshmallows, light pineapple, light caramelized brown sugar, lots of honey, the floral hops are beginning to oxidize. I remember Fred from the Wood being so much juicier and having a lot more pineapple. This seems to have more burnt toastiness and more transparent alcohol. The rye malt is quite evident in the finish, adds a nice spicy kick. The palate is pretty spectacular though, syrupy but carbonated by lots of very tiny fine sparkling bubbles. I have more to age, however, I wanted to see what these 10 hop varieties tasted like somewhat fresh. hallinghansen (263), Odense SV, Denmark Dec 23, 2008 Updated: Dec 24, 2008Red/orange hazy body, almost no head. Aroma is citrus and hops. Flavour is fruity and sweet, aftertaste is bitter form the hops. A very good beer minch25 (346), Columbus, Ohio, USA Dec 22, 2008 Clear sparkling amber body. Incredibly dense craggy mountainous layered khaki head. Piquant hop aroma. Very creamy texture. Wow. Incredibly rich flavor. Spicy and warm up front. A lot of malt; caramel. Sturdy hop backbone. Wood notes in the middle. Awesome beer, quickly becoming one of my favorite styles. ketchepillar (475), Viņa del Mar, Chile Dec 11, 2008 Aroma is quite sweet with a surprising amount of yeasty, funky sourness that stings the nostrils. Flavor is definitely very interesting as well. At times it seems very candy sweet, at times it is incredibly dry and bitter. Very fruity. Cranberry. The finish is really interesting, very dry and spicy. It really attacks the tongue. Very strong beer. crowderm (275), Recklinghausen, Germany Dec 11, 2008 Nice hazy gold color with a creamy white head. Strong aroma, mostly sweet malt, but some nice apple, lemon and peach as well. Flavor is made up of a sweet fruit, rock candy, and nice bit of citrus/floral hops. Pretty potent stuff. Smooth, full mouthfeel. Very good overall. hillfiiiiire (283), Madison, Wisconsin, USA Dec 11, 2008 Pours a hazy body with a thin white head. Aroma is lemony. It almost reminds me of a sour but with a little more malt to it. I rather like it. Flavor is much like the aroma. It is quite sweet. Probably sugar cane. However, there is a nice sour character to it. It is certainly a nice take on the barley wine style. Nice smooth mouthfeel. Good beer. blipp (1630), Newark, New Jersey, USA Dec 8, 2008 Updated: Feb 22, 2009Batch 72. Pours orange with a thin off white head. Sweet malt aroma with caramel and candy sugar. The flavor has dark fruits, sweet caramel, candy sugar, and just a touch of floral hops. Smooth and enjoyable. 7/3/8/4/16
Batch 63 Pours red amber with an off white head. Sweet caramel malt aroma. The flavor is malt dominated and lightly sweet with caramel, a hint of toast and toffee. 7/3/7/4/15
I prefer the balance of a fresher batch.
