tgncc (796), Bellmore, New York, USA Aug 11, 2008 Nice enticing aroma of candy sugar, bready malts, dark fruits and alcohol. The appearance is a reddish gold color. The flavor is sweet, moderate candy sugar, rye, and hops. The finish is a nicely crafted mixture of bittering hops and lingering sugar. On the thick and oily side. Definitely a nice example of the classic barley wine, sweet and alcoholic, with a slight (and not overpowering) sprinkling of hops. glennmastrange (807), hobe sound, Florida, USA Aug 6, 2008 Bottle. Heavy malt aromas of light bread, cereal and caramel, moderate pine and light orange for the hops, moderate dough for the yeast, with notes of date, wine, toffee, and dried cherry. Head is small, creamy, slightly off-white, with virtually no lacing, but it did coat the glass quite well. Color is hazy orange. Flavor starts moderately sweet and acidic, then finishes lightly sweet and moderately acidic and bitter. Palate is medium to full, oily, and has a soft carbonation. It finishes moderately astringent and sticky. Bold aromas and flavors set this beer apart from most other Barly wines. It definitely needs to warm above refidgerator temperature though. KawaBomber (193), New Jersey, USA Aug 4, 2008 12oz Bottle: Pours clear amber w/ a huge off-white head that leaves a nice bit of lacing behind. First sniff: alcohol. Back for sniff two...Rye bread. Flavor has sweet candy sugar & an alcohol burn. Almost syrupy mouthfeel. Sweet finish lingers forever. Good stuff. kmeves (1080), Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, USA Aug 3, 2008 Pours a cloudy pale orange with a huge frothy off white head. Aroma is medium sweet with light caramel and citrus as well as a bit resiny. Flavor is big with a good deal of caramel malt and piney hops. Finishes long and sticky with a slight alcohol burn. Medium bodied, smooth texture. chicagodri (1021), Chicago, Illinois, USA Aug 3, 2008 Pours a copper color with a white head. When the outside of the bottle says Golden Special Ale, I really wasn’t expecting much. However, this is an amazing beer. Nice aroma of caramel, hops, and a little alcohol. For a 10% beer it is amazingly smooth. This is a great beer...I need to get some more. uhre (339), Denmark Aug 2, 2008 The colour is copper brown with no head. The aroma is of caramel and dark fruit. Flavor is of dark fruit perhaps there is some citrus in the aftertaste. hayduke (1620), Eureka, California, USA Aug 2, 2008 From a 12 oz bottle this poured a cloudy amber color with fat and foamy off-white head that lasted a long time and left big hunks of lacing in the glass. Rich and smooth mouthfeel. Flavor is caramel hops and lots of citrus, floral, and pine hops. A treat for the palate.Good and long lasting bitter finish. Excellent. Beerlando (2284), Orlando, Florida, USA Jul 30, 2008 Pours a lightly hazy dark orange amber. A massive, foamy, tan colored head settles to a small blanket, with thick patches of organic looking lace coating the glass well. The aroma shows huge brown sugar notes up front, followed by waves of caramel, cream, hazelnuts, and pancakes drizzled with fresh maple syrup. Vanilla is consistently present in the background of the nose, and some notes of rye and citrus blossoms move in on the back end as well. Flavors move from sweet and sugary to citrus hoppy and back again in a seamless transition. The brown sugar, vanilla, and nut components are so prominent, its almost like they started with a brownie recipe and decided to brew a beer instead. Pancakes come to mind again, as does German chocolate cake icing. The spicy citrus hops provide just the right amount of bite to even things out. Nearly full bodied, with a creamy palate, it drinks heavy and definitely makes for a slow sipper. This beer is just fantastic. Now, if only they would age some in oak......oh, wait.
