alafito (334), tijuana, Mexico Jul 1, 2008 Its says "GOLDEN ALE", and it says "made in the Belgium tradition". And now i see its a barleywine. It doesnt really know what it is.
Pours flat with a nice fruity and vanilla nose. Tastes sugary, with cherries, plums and oranges. Palate is super sweet with a big alcohol burn. Finish is herbal and spicey with more alcohol. jcwattsrugger (5223), Florida and, New Jersey, USA Jun 30, 2008 12oz bottle @Joe’s NYC Gathering shared by idrinkale–pours a light tan ring with cloudy copper color. Aroma is alcohol, bourbon/oak, dark fruit-plum, sweet. Taste is bourbon/oak, dark fruit-plum, sweet, much less alcohol than expected from the aroma, cherry/herbal. plovmand (1590), Helsinge, Denmark Jun 29, 2008 Bottle. Pours hazy amber with a average white head. Hoppy and malty aroma with notes of caramel. Great mouthfeel. Very malty barley taste with flowers and hops to end it. Long bitter aftertaste. Good stuff. polomagnifico (532), Saginaw, Michigan, USA Jun 25, 2008 Bottle from BOLTZ7555, thanks again! Aroma of caramel, dried fruits, flowers and brown sugar. Medium honey amber hue with an average sized off-white head that mostly diminished and left good lace. Flavor is sweet and sticky caramel and flowery hops with a nice bitterness on the finish. Palate is lively and full bodied. This brew really opened up as it warmed and became much more complex with some sweet spice and fruits. Very well done and very delicious. LinusStick (1831), Moon Twp, suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 20, 2008 A very nice barley wine. Aroma of burnt caramel, marker and Vicks Vapo Rub. Pour was an outstanding murky dark gold with a suprising 2 finger near tan head. Taste was big and over the top. Sticky sweet thick caramel malt with a strong hoppy backbone and heavy alcohol burn in the back. Suprisingly strong carbonation which isn’t typical for this style, but made it much more enjoyable to me. Trying the wood version after this. I bet this is incredible with a year on it. GMCC2181 (846), Bear, Delaware, USA Jun 17, 2008 Updated: Sep 22, 2008Bottle from big fern in NY! I dont know why this bottle says "golden special ale" when it is a Barley wine. But... pours a red/amber color, no head. Smells hoppy. Taste is super sweet malt. Light touch of hops. Low carbonation with a medium texture. I agree with kegbear, every HOtD beer that I have had is good. Including this one. I will let another "fred" age to see if he gets better!*****UPDATE******* Last time I wasnt expecting a barleywine but this time I was. Not as good as doggies claws but still a top notch barleywine kegbear (265), Orange, California, USA Jun 17, 2008 Like every Hair of the Dog beer I’ve had, this one is really great. Poured with almost no head. Strong malt and caramel flavor. Smooth palate with a slight hop finish. This baby is for sipping. I will definately get this again.
