DTM (541), Winters, California, USA Mar 24, 2008 Timfoolery scored this bottle on a trip to Oregon. Poured a golden color. Full flavored barleywine with a close to perfect balance of malt and hops. Had a mild aftertaste that I just couldn’t quite place. I guess I’ll have to try it again. timfoolery (482), California, USA Mar 24, 2008 I picked this one up on a trek in Oregon. Fred is a golden-color barleywine that could double as a light, Belgian Trippel. Full-flavored and good control on the palate. cellardoor (45), St. Louis, Missouri, USA Mar 20, 2008 Wow, this was a completely different beer between the first and the third sip. Either way it poured with a deep golden, almost shiny color. Had a lingering white head and packed an intense aroma of a number of hops. After letting it breathe it settled into itself and became very drinkable with a very pleasant warm maltiness to complement the wide reaching hop flavor. One of the most drinkable barleywines I’ve had. southamptonsam (81), New York, USA Mar 17, 2008 Batch 69. What a lovely beer. Great nose. Perfect carbonation. The smoothest Barlewine I’ve had. Complex flavors with a hint of sweetness and just the right hoppiness. Lighter than most Barleywines, looking a bit like a Belgian Trippel. Each sip tastes better than the last. xmarcnolanx (789), Kirkwood, Missouri, USA Mar 16, 2008 Batch 53.
Aroma is earthy and slightly oxidized, lending itself to a profile packed with caramel, sherry, and no small amount of sweetness.
Palate is still very carbonated, with chewy caramel and a port essence that is just starting to emerge.
Personally, this could go another few years, I think, but is great right now.
Finishes with a club soda dryness I think comes from the carbonation and a residual hop bitterness of citrus rind. wickedpete (625), Lexington Park, Maryland, USA Mar 15, 2008 Thanks to Brian for this one. Batch 70. This is a most delicious barley wine. The body appears a cloudy orange-amber and no head is formed but spots of bubbles stick to the glass. Aroma is strongly of apples and caramel, and the alcohol comes through in the nose. Pine flavor is noticeable at first, and then notes of toffee, dry bitter hops, and a woody touch in the finish. The palate is light on the tongue, without being watery, instead the flavor remains quite substantial. dkachur (2319), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA Mar 14, 2008 Bottle traded from beastiefan2k. Thanks! Pours a hazy orange color with a medium frothy head. Good lacing and retention. Green apple/butterscotch aroma. Taste of caramel, butterscotch, hops, grapefruit. Very nice. ndubs360 (114), portland, Oregon, USA Mar 10, 2008 Pours a golden color with a small, dissipating head. When swirled, more head is created than the initial pour. Smells of hops and grapefruit, i taste a little banana here which is strange. Fruity, strong, delicious.
