The smoothest Barlewine I’ve had. Complex flavors with a hint of sweetness and just the right hoppiness. Lighter than most Barleywines, looking a bit like a Belgian Trippel. Each sip tastes better than the last. xmarcnolanx (792), Kirkwood, Missouri, USA

Aroma is earthy and slightly oxidized, lending itself to a profile packed with caramel, sherry, and no small amount of sweetness.
Palate is still very carbonated, with chewy caramel and a port essence that is just starting to emerge.
Personally, this could go another few years, I think, but is great right now.
Finishes with a club soda dryness I think comes from the carbonation and a residual hop bitterness of citrus rind. wickedpete (626), Lexington Park, Maryland, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Mar 15, 2008 Thanks to Brian for this one. Batch 70. This is a most delicious barley wine. The body appears a cloudy orange-amber and no head is formed but spots of bubbles stick to the glass. Aroma is strongly of apples and caramel, and the alcohol comes through in the nose. Pine flavor is noticeable at first, and then notes of toffee, dry bitter hops, and a woody touch in the finish. The palate is light on the tongue, without being watery, instead the flavor remains quite substantial. dkachur (2350), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA

Good lacing and retention. Green apple/butterscotch aroma. Taste of caramel, butterscotch, hops, grapefruit. Very nice. ndubs360 (114), portland, Oregon, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Mar 10, 2008 Pours a golden color with a small, dissipating head. When swirled, more head is created than the initial pour. Smells of hops and grapefruit, i taste a little banana here which is strange. Fruity, strong, delicious. hapjydeuce (767), Del Mar, California, USA

Clear dark copper color with bubbles that slowly rise to the surface throughout the glass. Yummy head and serious lacing that settled out, making the appearance just shy of a 5. Complex bouquet of tangerine citrus, ginger root, lemongrass and butterscotch candy. Also a character of dark raisin bread. Great! Flavor follows up faithfully, with notes of rye, pine and fresh cut cedar wood, and grapefruit. Warming alcohol statement with a complex hop profile. Full-bodied with a slightly numbing mouth-feel. Bomb! I can see how this was a great base for the barrel-aged version. auderale (572), Fairchild AFB, Washington, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Mar 9, 2008 Bottle, batch #69. Cloudy orangish colored pour with little white head. Hoppy, sour fruity aroma. Caramel, malty sweet taste. A little bitter. hiddenvariable (194), pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 5, 2008 bottle. pours a clearish gold with a thick eggshell colored head, that lasts forever, and leaves thick lacing throughout. smells of rye bread, caramel malts, and fruits such as peaches and white grapes. honey malt flavor, with some spice, more rye bread, and raisins, with a huge citrus hop kick at the end. light bittersweet finish, with a thick and chewey mouthfeel, medium to full body, lots of carbonation. very interesting and unique ale, though maybe something i would prefer to drink sparingly.
