12-oz bottle, courtesy of Cellars Wine & Spirits in St Paul, MN. Pours a thick, cloudy, amber with a lot of carbonation and a lumpy light tan head. A very sticky lacing. Aroma is fruity, peaches, sweet apples, roasted barley grain and some grassy hops. Taste is sweet and fruity with a full body and creamy brew. A bitter finish. Nice.

Deep colour, nice head. Pretty typical for the barley wine style. Very strong alcoholic smell with a hint of fruit (apple). Taste is similar, strong alcohol, malty, hint of sharp apple. Nice barley wine but a little on the strong side.

This pours like beer *should* look like. Deep brown near the top fading to amber at the bottom with a medium white head. Aroma is caramel and hoppy. Flavor is a rich hop/malt balance with oak notes. Finishes with an acceptable level of alcohol burn in the back of the throat. Very nice.

12 oz Bottle. Pours hazy rust color with large, long-lasting, tight beige head. The aroma is fruity with lime zest, some papaya, pineapple, and some yeasty spiciness. The flavor is much the same: lime, tropical fruit, corriander. The rye malt is quite apparent, too. Toward the middle the flavor becomes much like rye bread, in fact. Grapefruity hops come out toward the finish, quite prominently, along with some wood and smooth, fruity alcohol. The aftertaste lingers forever, with some bitterness and wood. Very impressive beer, indeed.

A lazy rerate. I added a point to the overall. This bottle is from the same batch as the original rating. Only thing I can add is that the alcohol is present in the aroma and flavor, but doesn’t seem any stronger than the 10%. BItterness peaked at a 3 in the finish. It didn’t seem like I enjoyed this last time I had it, but a year and a half later, I do like it--though it’s still pretty sweet. Old rating follows. 12oz Batch 62 from Hi-Time Wine. Pours a cloudy orange caramel with a huge 3 1/2 finger beige head with good retention. Aroma of yeast, raisins, herbal and floral hops, honey, spices, caramel and toffee. Flavor is a bit more earthy (dirt) and a lot more bitter with some off sourness. Very sweet with a dry lingering bitter finish. Highly carbonated with a medium to full body. Didn’t really see why this was so highly rated. Maybe got a bad batch of bottles since all of the HOTD bottles I picked up don’t have the cap on straight, though I’ve heard this isn’t unusual for HOTD.
