HopheadHans (753), Bay Area, California, USA Nov 13, 2006 Bottle. Pours with an organe color and is quite hazy. The head is medium and retains well. Very nice aromas of craamel, toffe and malts. The flavor profile is dominated by toffe, malts perhaps a hint of vanilla and some hops in the background. Very nice motuhfeel, the alcohol becomes more pronounced when the beer warms up. 2beerguys (299), North Shore, Massachusetts, USA Nov 2, 2006 "Fred" pours with a massive head and, as such, it took forever to pour this one into the glass. When we finally did, we find a light brown to medium amber colored body, topped off with a huge, light-brown head. Good lacing behind a mostly lasting head. Hazy body. Aromas are of light malts with a hint of molasses, light hops with grass notes, and alcohol. Initial taste is lightly sweet, finishing with a boldly moderate sweet. Medium on the palate, we’re left with a creamy texture, soft carbonation, and a moderate alcohol tinge.
Reviewer’s notes: "Batch #54, taking forever to pour, you can taste the alcohol in this one, a tricky golden ale that is anything but" sliffy (1966), Columbus, Ohio, USA Nov 2, 2006 Bottle thanks to footbalm: Brown in color with an off white head. Aroma, some alcohol, very malty, brown sugar, molassas, caramel. Flavor, sweet, with some smoky/tobacco notes, some slight hops in there, but they are really in the background. Very smooth and drinkable. KAME (156), California, USA Oct 21, 2006 Batch #60. Pours a deep amber with a frothy off-white head. Lots of sediment in the glass and a bit left in the bottle. Aroma is sweet malty caramel and is very nice. Flavor is very malty with hints of dark fruity with a nice hoppy bitterness and warming alcoholic finish. Overall it’s a very good brew. Stine (1380), St. Paul, Minnesota, USA Oct 18, 2006 Updated: Apr 11, 2008One to slowly guide your head onto the pillow, or the floor. Rusty orange in color and completely opaque. Aroma of alcohol, caramel, candy, flowers, barrels and barrels of scotch, and a slightly citrusy edge. Like a boozy candy store. Flavor is intensely woody, with peat, musty autumn leaves and a strong tobacco finish, crushed with sweet malt. Thick and rich mouthfeel like swallowing the remnants of centuries-old wild honey. 8/4/8/4/17 4.1
Batch 63, likely from late 04 or early 05. A peppering of grainy sediment through a firey orange body; a generous, gooey raft of white. Aroma first is like a french dessert white wine; full of floral tones, honey, and delicate fruit character. Citrus fruit, white fruit, tropical fruit, candied fruit. Bursting with fine trimmed detail. Tanned musty leaves, sandalwood, and cinammon lend a restrained counterpart of rustic, smoky sweetness. Yeasts layer thickly underneath; everything swarms together warmly on this chunky core of sweet dough. Apple cider vinegar and fresh cut grass further down. Beautifully full at first, and fading slowly given some breathing. Flavor seems simpler. Good vodka. Honey crusted grilled rye. Pineapple. Floral perfumes. Oak and almost lactic tartness; pear skins, vanilla, sweet pine smoke. Mid palate is a milky softening; a retreat of sorts. Pine bitterness and cloying peppermint cream candies. Mouthfeel is somewhat sharp with carbonation; doughy, dense, firm. Ludicrously high drinkability on this one. Finishes with some citrus, peppercorns, and rye bread. Well aged. 8/4/8/4/17 4.1 porterhouse (1148), Alna, Maine, USA Oct 16, 2006 (Bottle (batch #54) from Julio’s Liquors (MA), cellared for 7 mos. after purchase) Pretty rich stuff, great barleywine...Pours a murky amber with a couple inches of soft, pillowy light amber-tinted cream head that recedes to about 1/4" and just stays. Aroma is malty rock sugar candy. Palate is smooth and full, head is creamy. Some pillowy lacing. Taste is malty and sweet, rock candy flavor with some pine in the finish. Some alcohol burn. A quality brew, very satisfying. beachbum25 (778), Powellville, Maryland, USA Oct 14, 2006 12 oz Bottle-Batch 62-Trade w/after4ever. Good solid beer, pours a cloudy orange color w/a lot of lacing which lasts thru the beer. Somewhat reminiscant of a Belgium, more carbination than a typical Barley Wine. Spicey, fizzy, w/some citrus. Very enjoyable brew-it’s no Doggie claws, but not much else is!! Thanks for this one Tom!!! HopBackDoc (393), Hatboro, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 9, 2006 Had to try this because my dog’s name is Fred. Batch # 59. Poured a deep amber color with a big pillowy head that lasted through the entire drink. Great lacing, too. Aroma of fruits, yeast, malts. Flavor was fruity (apples, grapes), malty, yeaty carbonation with a hop bitterness in the finish. Mellow and smooth body, warming alcohol. Real delicious brew, quite a different barleywine.
