beernbourbon (236), chicago, Illinois, USA May 24, 2009 Updated: Jun 11, 2009Thanks to BrewDad for this one!. Batch 73 done in side-by-side with ’07 Fred From the Wood. This one is ever so slightly lighter in color. It is a deep, cloudy orange with a huge rocky off-white head. Aroma is light hops, light citrus, floral notes, and light brown sugar. Flavor is black pepper and hops up front. Then melds into citrus hops, grapefruit and slight alcohol burn. I like this, it reminds me of one of my all time favorites (De Dolle Arabier) but with all the flavors intensified and with a fuller body. Much less sweet and more effervescent than the from the wood. A bit easier to drink as well. The From the wood is more of a sipper for me. Pwn3d (1040), Manhattan, New York, USA May 13, 2009 12 oz. Peach nose which is nay zee. Taste is an amazing peach and creme underneath malts, booze, and toasty malts and caramel. I really like this. Gypsy19 (603), California, USA May 12, 2009 Batch 73. Pours a copper orange with a huge, everlasting head. Aroma is hoppy, sweet, floral, of peach/apricot, a little spicy. Once you devour a lot of foam, you can actually taste it; It is very DIPA-ish; bitter hops, sweet fruit, flora, and then bitter again at the end. Very different from your average barleywine. Again, tastes like a Double IPA. No matter what it’s classified as, it’s pretty good. Palate is a little sticky, a little carbonated, not too special. Booze is around the whole time, but never overpowering. Different, unorthodox, but satisfying. Overall, very good minus. jredmond (1015), New Jersey, USA May 11, 2009 Bottle. Pours a dark golden red body. Aroma is sweet malt and peach. Taste is sweet hop, syrupy mouthfeel. ElDuderino (136), Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, USA May 7, 2009 On tap at The Toronado, SD. Dark caramel body with a very thin white head. Nose is sweet and heavy with sugars, a touch of licorice. Flavors are hot and sweet with notes of rising bread, caramel, toasted peanuts and brown sugar. Very nice and unexpected bitter finish with some floral hoppy notes. petematte46 (213), Dallas, Texas, USA May 6, 2009 Pours a murky amber body with a large creamy off-white head. Aroma is citrusy hops and flowers with some earthy mineral note. Flavour is sweet caramel malt which moves into a spicey flavour before ending with a very dry hoppy bitter finish. SamGamgee (1396), Santa Cruz (La Selva), California, USA May 3, 2009 12oz bottle, batch 63. Dark gold with suspended sediment and a huge, pillowy white head. The bottle was a slow gusher, and the head took a few minutes to calm and allow any substantial amount of beer to get in the glass. The aroma has honey, toffee, nuts, toasted bread, and lots of spicy hops. The flavor has nutty, toasty malt, light caramel, spicy rye, and ample hop bitterness and grapefruit peel flavors. Medium-full body with ample, tight carbonation to scrub the palate. An interesting beer; seems somewhere in-between a DIPA and a barley wine. Hoppy, yet pretty balanced, with an interesting malt profile. scrizzz (1252), kirkland, Washington, USA May 1, 2009 How have I not rated this yet? No time like the present. Batch 73. Huge towering head, shoulda poured this gently. In fact, while I was waiting for the head in the glass to settle the head in the bottle continued to rise and spill onto the table. Still looks great though, oranged copper, proud white head just a shade toward tan. Strong milk caramel aroma, sanded down with wood before it gets abrasive. Still strong with the alcohol. Still a bit boozy and not as symphonic like I remember. Strong caramel, some rose petals, and golden raisin. I bought a case to watch it develop, can’t wait to revisit and adjust.
