AZBennett (114) - Chandler, Arizona, USA - MAY 12, 2013
Bottle courtesy of Porcelainbomb (reddit trader). Pours dark orange and gold with zero carbonation. Aromas are sweet sugary goodness, apricot, caramel and soap. Flavors are big sweet candy, then alcohol both burn and flavor, then something that tastes akin to carrot juice and finally some intense hop bitterness. Palate is very heavy in weight but a little thin and hot, it would benefit from some carbonation. Overall, this is a good beer though it is hard to wrap my head around all the flavors and feelings this is trying to convey to the drinker; it is a little too broad in flavor which causes it to become muddled. Still above average due to it’s scope and the fact that not many brewers would take this kind of a chance.

Bottle to snifter Aroma of Scottish tablet, pepper, wheat, and raisin. Pours with a massive frothy off white head that peters away fairly quickly to a think frothy head, but leaving a large amount of lacing. The beer is a somewhat cloudy reddish amber. Taste is alcohol, orange, rye, and malts with a strong bitter ending. Very strong.

Caytinator (939) - Tucson, Arizona, USA - AUG 18, 2014
On tap at the brewery -- copper & opaque, head fades off and leaves lacing, no residual head (collar). Kind of weird, super-strong taste (alcohol) and aftertaste (rye). Yeah this beer is weird just like their other beers, but better. Why do they love rye so much? The candi sugar muddles the waters a bit...the rye is interesting as well, points for originality but a little lacking in execution. Get your mouth ready, so to speak.

I went to the brewery to taste this highly rated beer. For $9 a bottle! it was a huge dissapointment. Highly overrated. Flat chocolate drink with alcohol. Typically American overblown beer with any lack of subtlety. The micro brews have brought a new beer culture to the US, but as with most things it is overdone and lacks balance. No comparison with the Belgian abby beers.

Batch 90 consumed on 8/6/14. Hazy light orange/copper pour with loose head. Sweet aroma of caramel and raisin and a taste to match. The alcohol is hidden well, but the palate was a bit too heavily carbonated and fizzy. Not my favorite style, but I liked it more than most barleywines (which seems the best category for this beer).

Pours a deep cloudy gold with minimal head. Aroma of plumb and maple. The taste is sweet with a stiff bitterness that follows the alcohol burn. Fruit notes rise as the bitterness fades. Mouthfeel is thick and smooth. The strength of the beer is not masked that well. Thanks to BrAd for bringing me back a Fred. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap @ Hair of the Dog, Portland. Pours hazy golden with a big creamy head. Aroma is quite malty with oak, toffee, grain and some notes of spice and juniper, as well as some hoppy apricots. Full body with very soft carbonation. Flavour is roasted malts with notes of bread, as well as kandi, vanilla, perfume and flowers, and some hoppy orange peel. Long balanced finish.

On tap at the brewpub - Pours hazy golden with a white head. The aroma has candi sugar, light spice and Belgium abbey yeast. It has a full rich body with semi-soft carbonation and is pretty smooth. The flavor starts off very sweet with light toast and a bit of spice, pepper and a ribbony caramel trait. Nicely done.

I agree with the previous comments about batch 92. Unfortunately, not up to the standards of this great brewery. Flat. Boozy. Suspended floating particles. The honey at the end was the only redemption.

12oz batch 93 in Chapeau glass. Viscid pour of turbid amber with negligible foam. Cigar box, lavender, maple sugar, and leaf litter aromas. Heavy-handed doses of sweet and tannic bitter fight for dominance with no bubbles to referee. This is not ready.
