smashteroid (144), USA Apr 9, 2008 Served cold from a bottle. Pours a beautiful amber/honey color with a thick off-white head that leaves a good amount of lacing. The aroma is sweet (to me), yeasty with a lot of fruity notes (pears? apples?) and a hint of hops. The flavor is rich in malts and hops, a slight alcoholic aftertaste, and plenty of sweetness and fruits, quite like the aroma. There are a wide variety of flavors at play here. The mouthfeel is slightly warm from the alcohol, thick and sticky. Overall I would rate this beer highly due to its unusual blend of flavors and general drinking goodness. Not for the faint of heart.
pineypower (846), Pine Barrens, New Jersey, USA Jul 26, 2008 Thanks to Santa for this one. Pours out a very nice slightly reddish golden color with a nice lacing head. Aroma is of some nice sweet fruits with slight bitterness. Taste is complex with sweet fruits, sugar, earth and some slight bitterness, the alcohol on this one doesn’t creep up until the finish. Very solid. Furseth (1091), Kungälv, Sweden Jul 23, 2008 Bottle: Hazy red colour,,flat head. Aroma of raisins, caramel, alcy, dust, and some viny nose in the end. Flavor is almost the same. Medium to big caramelly body.Medium fruity finish. This was a nice beer indeed! durhambeer (326), Durham, North Carolina, USA Jul 22, 2008 Bottle, thanks to emacgee. Label said "GOLDEN SPECIAL ALE," so I was surprised by the appearance and aroma, but pleasantly so. Deep amber, clear at first, but a bit cloudy after pouring in just a touch of the sediment. Medium off-white head. Smelled closer to a barley wine with notes of a good quad. A good bit of hops present, a bit of spiciness, and yeast and fruits and lots of malt and burnt sugar. Similar on the palate. Cotton candy fruity sweetness, hops, malt; alcohol pretty well hidden given the strength. I’m not a huge barley wine guy, but this was quite good. Can see how aging would work wonders.
