Okay, as is usually the case with this brewer, this beer foamed up like nobody's business no matter which method of pouring or glass style. It poured a light clear amber color with a huge off white foamy head that left latticed lace as it slowly began it's stubborn depature. A medium amount of carbonation is present, surprising, considering the amount of head I would had expected more. An aroma of malt, caramel and alcohol. A flavor of malt, caramel and alcohol with other sweet dark fruit flavors floating around. A medium body and a slightly sweet, yet somewhat bitter finish. A Belgian triple with barley wine elements. A good beer.

33 cl bottle @ home. Pours hazy dark amber with a lot of sediment and an off-white head that leaves a little lacing. Aroma and flavour are caramel, alcohol, dried fruit, orange rind, and hops - with a bitter and alcoholic finish.

Pour with thick rich head and big malty rye aroma. The flavor was so big and rich, yah needed a fork and knife to cut through it. Absolutly big wonderful beer for the tastebuds. Great hop usage to balance it out. Great finish with added warmth to put this over top.

You’ll know what you’re getting into at first whiff. Malts and alcohol greet you, a murky copper color with just a ring of head around the glass. Some caramel/ toffee sweetness mellows the whole thing. Alcohol burn and warmth all the way down.

good brew; didn’t seem like a barley wine to me. raisins and yeast in aroma and taste... ok, but I don’t see the fuss..

Bottled sample via and shared with oakbluff. Clear amber in colour with medium carbonation and virtually no head. Aromas are of dried apricot, toffee, booze, licorice, and earth. A bit of sherry on the palate, along with white pepper, and spicy grain. This bottle had a few years on it, but was still a bit hot. OK.

Pretty boozy and sweet aroma. Taste was a bit different for me. Almost to dry. Mouthfeel wasn't exactly for me.

Bottle to snifter Aroma of Scottish tablet, pepper, wheat, and raisin. Pours with a massive frothy off white head that peters away fairly quickly to a think frothy head, but leaving a large amount of lacing. The beer is a somewhat cloudy reddish amber. Taste is alcohol, orange, rye, and malts with a strong bitter ending. Very strong.

On tap at the brewery -- copper & opaque, head fades off and leaves lacing, no residual head (collar). Kind of weird, super-strong taste (alcohol) and aftertaste (rye). Yeah this beer is weird just like their other beers, but better. Why do they love rye so much? The candi sugar muddles the waters a bit...the rye is interesting as well, points for originality but a little lacking in execution. Get your mouth ready, so to speak.

I went to the brewery to taste this highly rated beer. For $9 a bottle! it was a huge dissapointment. Highly overrated. Flat chocolate drink with alcohol. Typically American overblown beer with any lack of subtlety. The micro brews have brought a new beer culture to the US, but as with most things it is overdone and lacks balance. No comparison with the Belgian abby beers.

Tasty. Cloudy dirty golden pour toffee and dark fruit aroma. Sweet toffee nice floral hops some caramel. Lively carbonation moderate body. Tasty.
