matt7215 (499), Cambridge, Ontario, Canada Apr 16, 2008 bottle from a trade with SuzyGreenberg. bottle from batch 70. was saving this one but since its the BOTD i decided to crack it. pours golden with a big off white head. aromas are hoppy american barley wine with some of the 10% ABV showing in the nose. flavours are wonderful balanced between the sturdy malt backbone and the 10 different hop varieties. the rye malt smooths out the mouthfeel but the hops add a nice bitter finish. very very nice, especially as a bonus bottle. thanks ben!
Furseth (1091), Kungälv, Sweden Jul 23, 2008 Bottle: Hazy red colour,,flat head. Aroma of raisins, caramel, alcy, dust, and some viny nose in the end. Flavor is almost the same. Medium to big caramelly body.Medium fruity finish. This was a nice beer indeed! durhambeer (323), Durham, North Carolina, USA Jul 22, 2008 Bottle, thanks to emacgee. Label said "GOLDEN SPECIAL ALE," so I was surprised by the appearance and aroma, but pleasantly so. Deep amber, clear at first, but a bit cloudy after pouring in just a touch of the sediment. Medium off-white head. Smelled closer to a barley wine with notes of a good quad. A good bit of hops present, a bit of spiciness, and yeast and fruits and lots of malt and burnt sugar. Similar on the palate. Cotton candy fruity sweetness, hops, malt; alcohol pretty well hidden given the strength. I’m not a huge barley wine guy, but this was quite good. Can see how aging would work wonders. Suds_McDuff (976), was CapeTown,SA-now Houston,TX, Texas, USA Jul 21, 2008 poured after a tough day on the trail .... wow, is a yummy beer, melts in your mouth and brain ... lots of sweetness ... alcohol is pretty well hidden ... good lacing ... can tell the candy sugar is in there ... is a very nice beer that is just damn enjoyable, would love to try the wood aged... railcat1 (482), Hammond, Indiana, USA Jul 20, 2008 I have been holding on to this for a while and felt it was time to try it poured a dark brown and with a thick sticky look and feel to it that had a nice tan head, the taste was a caramel malty and a strong alcohol kick to it i am not a big fan of barley wines but this was not bad at all.CHEERS! jjpm74 (2760), Connecticut, USA Jul 16, 2008 Pours caramel brown with a sustained white head. Smells of bananas, vanilla, fresh strawberries, lots of spicy awesomeness. Tastes of dry malt, lots of caramel, some nice spiciness, citrussy hints, piney touches, touches of sweet malt on the finish. The Alcohol is not perceivable on this. This is a great beer!
