Bottle received in trade nicks6217. Pours very dark brown with a very small bubbly goldenish beige head that quickly dissipates without leaving any trace on the glass. Smell is sweet and malty with toasted malts, caramel, smoke, toffee, vanilla fudge, charred US oak, caramelized apples, roasted almonds, hay, bourbon, raisins, dates, bourbon, apple brandy, hazelnuts and hints of bitter chocolate. Taste is sweet, bitter and malty with roasted malts, caramel, toffee, biscuits, smoke, vanilla fudge, roasted malts, brown sugar, apple brandy, bourbon, charred US oak, roasted coconut, raisins, prunes, dates, moist soil, dried pine needles, wet stone and hints of tummy warming alcohol. Mouthfeel is oily, round, tiny sticky sweet, tiny roasted astringent and full bodied. Finish is sweet and malty with roasted malts, caramel, toffee, vanilla fudge, bourbon, apple skins, moist soil, biscuits, apple brandy, hay, smoke and charred wood. Incredibly complex…

Hair of the dog matt at RBWG-2014 Intimidating strong aroma suggests boozy syrup over dark bread with a touch of smoke. Flavor follows. It is sweet and syrupy. Interesting for sure, but too extreme. More cordial than ale.

Pours a deep mahogany. Light carbonation. Quickly diminishing head, light spotty lacing. Aroma is fantastic. Nice deep oak with sweet molasses and slight alcohol/bourbon sting. A second (and third) smell gives some vanilla and dark fruits. Taste is almost as it smells. The body is relatively light as I was expecting something thicker from the sweet molasses on the nose. The oak, vanilla and alcohol interplay in smooth cohesion. Nothing to overbearing but all very present. Finishes very clean. No alcohol sting, but rather a nice warming sensation. A bit sticky on the palate at the end...some lingering notes of booze and caramel in the back. Outstanding beer.

This brew is a fitting choice for my 500th rate. Pours a dark brown. Scent is rich, sweet, and boozy. Flavor is all over the place yet is somehow unified. Smoke, molasses, and fruit combine in lovely fashion. Thick and lasting on the tongue. Bottle - Share from jrob21
