Bottle at Hair of the Dog. Pour is deep brown, almost Merlot like with a small tan head that quickly dissipated. Huge oaky, grapey, tannic, caramelized sugars, figs, sweet fruits and bourbon notes in the aroma. Taste is highly complex - smoke, licorice, dark grapes, leather, tannins, prunes, and wood leading to light heat on the finish. Slick mouthfeel with soft carbonation. Very interesting beer and another winner from Hair of the Dog that canít be defined by style.

2013 bottle at HotD. No head. Body is black. Aroma is heavily malty (caramel, chocolate, roasted grain), with notes of alcohol, brown sugar, cognac, raisin, wood. Flavor is heavily to harshly sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Full body, syrupy texture, soft/flat carbonation, heavily alcoholic. Smells fairly nice, but itís mostly sugary notes that warn you of its sweetness. And holy balls is it sweet...undrinkably so. I tried, god did I try at 18 frickiní dollars for a 12oz bottle. But I could not do it. My teeth/gums ached at every sip. So syrupy, fatiguing, and cloying, ugh. I could perhaps put up with the strong throat burn if it was just anywhere close to being balanced, but as it is, the blazing alcohol just adds insult to injury. Over 80% of the bottle went down the tap drain, Iím sad to say. This was once a great brewery.

Bottle @ RBWG, Asheville. Thanks to whoever brought this along! Deep brown pour with a small head. Nose is quite subtle. Cherry fruit leather and coffee cake. Pain au chocolate and toasted nut. Rich and sweet. Distinct pillowy marshmallow and roasted chocolate flavor. Further accents of forest fruits. Mild smoked ham. Shag tobacco. Syrupy, oily. Thought-provoking stuff.

12 oz bottle. Served at Hair of the Dog, Portland, OR. Pours a still dark brown. Aroma is complex: sweet fruit, spicy pepper, wood, and booze. Flavor is massive: sweet dark fruits, bourbon, oak, vanilla, and a slight spicy character. Low carbonation, smooth mouthfeel. Delicious. From notes 2/15/13.

2009 Bottleworks X bottle. Pours a dark copper amber with no head. The aroma is strong smoke, oak, booze, pepper. Thin mouthfeel with flavors that just keep coming as you drink with nice apple coming through in the finish. Wow really enjoyed this one. 2010-way more smoke then the 09.

Very dark ruby-tinged brown with minimal beige lacing. Complex aroma of overripe apple, brown sugar, dried dark fruits, leather, tobacco, charred oak, and traces of cacao powder. Very good balance of liqueur sweetness with the bourbon bitterness. Smooth, full-bodied by not too heavy, and little by way of carbonation. Mild to moderate alcohol in the lingering finish .
