Bottle to oversized snifter (thanks, waltersrj). 2010 vintage. Looks decent; black with no CO2 or lacing to speak of. Smells great; malty and bourbony. Tastes great too; much like it smells. Nice on the palate. This is incredible beer!

Brown black colour, white head. Aroma of chocolate, roasted malts, bourbon, vanilla, a hint of apples. Sweet flavour, wood, bourbon, chocolate and caramel. Sweet finish, vanilla, apple, sticky dates and wood. Forgot the vintage, but a great brew it is!!

Bottle: 2010 vintage. Thanks, Jeff. Thick, viscous looking pour; a mix of dark brown & black in color with essentially no head. A modest, thin tan ring around the edge is the only sign of life. Insane aroma; honestly one of the best in business. Dizzyingly complex. Black cherries, figs, oak, vanilla beans, bourbon, semi-tart apples, caramelized brown sugar, toffee, blackcurrants & plums, ashy tobacco, light char, smoke, & a beautiful residual sweetness that ropes everything together & never comes off as overpowered or cloying. The alcohol commands itself on the palate, but asserts robustness rather than messiness, as the integration is nearly seamless. Sweet apples drenched in bourbon with a huge melange of fruit coming off; cherry, grape, plum, sugar coated dates, & currants, all coated in a thick lacquer of sticky toffee, caramel, molasses, brown sugar, & sherry. Lots of wood & spicy, wet oak in the periphery with a finish that veers more towards the signature Hair of the Dog flavors of ashy tobacco leaves, earthy leather, & mild smoked cedar. Huge beer on the palate, thick enough to cut with a knife; viscous, oily, coating. Boozy oak, dark fruits, apples, molasses, & roasty campfire smoke are leftovers on the palate, & will be lingering for days. Absolutely incredible.

Bottle. Thanks t0rin0! Murky deep brown liquid with minimal light tan head. Aroma of raw sugar, dark fruit, port wine, tobacco, peppery spice, toffee and sweet alcohol. Taste is medium sweet and light bitter with notes of raw sugar, toffee and raisins. Medium to full bodied with low to medium carbonation. Really good, complex. Awesome sweetness.

Bottle ’13 - Pours a dark brown w/ light tan head. The nose is bourbon, smoke, sweetness, and smoky. The taste is chocolate, apples, sweet, dates, and bourbon. There is some booze here but still drinkable and pretty smooth. It’s kind of an odd beer but it seems to work well.

(old rating, 04/2012). (almost) black beer, dark beige, fast disappearing head. Roasted malts, sweet alchol, bourbon and porto, vanilla en red fruit in the aroma. Taste: chocolate and licorice, sweet soft alcohol, bourbon, dark red fruit and resins, vanilla, ... Very good indeed!

Holy apple brandy spicy smoky goodness Batman! Possibly my favorite new Portland beer from the 2014 trip. A little boozy, otherwise faultless. Loved the toasty sweet and smoky aspect. A real treat. Glad we sprung for a 2013 bottle at HOTd.

Bottle from Chris. (I think, it was a while ago). 2013 edition. Dark murky brown. Not much carbonation. Smell is a bit of booze and sweetness. Taste has a scotch peat smokiness, caramel and brown sugar, some apple notes, maybe even apple brandy like, boozy, but no heat. This is defiantly a unique beer, somewhere in the old ale barleywine realm. Not sure what barrels used but like insaid it gives off a scotch and brandy taste.

Pour is extremely dark brown, murky, tan head. Nose has olive, chocolate malt, some peat and a light smokiness to it. Hints of caramel and brown sugar with a tough of dates. Taste is much more smokey and peaty, almost scotch esq. meaty an salty in the flavor, hints of the rich chocolate malt. Some sweeter berry malt in back. Maybe some iodine in there. Body is full with soft carb and creamy feel.

Dark brown poured from a 2013 12 oz bottle. Minimal head or I just don’t know how to pour properly. Beautiful malt and caramel aromas. Pleasant smoky taste that is well hidden in the aroma. Just realized this is 11.5% and it feels like it’s less than brandy Fred. Leaves a good sweet after taste. It is quite thick to the pour. Feels a little heavy, I could definitely have this for sipping. Slightly sweet for my highest rating.

Poured from 12 fl oz bottle. Dark brown with no head. Caramel, chocolate, raisin, molasses, syrup on the aroma. Same taste plus a lot of smoke. Alcohol is well hidden.
