2009 bottle 12oz. Clear amber small head. Nose tannic red fruits lots of wood.tannins and wood spices. Sharp citrusy tartness with nice sourness. Taste tannic wood with red fruits. Finish nicely tannic and woody fairly astringent finish. Quite busy finish. Finish really nicely woody and.tannic.
Very well.made well balanced. Surprisingly elegant even if intensely woody.
Great acidity really smooth. Light alcohol on the finish. I was not expecting a lot from this but it was actually really nice. Well balanced, intrinsically complex. Nice surprise !

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a murky red-orange with one finger of off white head. Appearance shows more weight than expected. Nose shows some acetic notes with caramel cherries, sharp oak, dark fruit, and a touch of diacetyl. Aroma has some nice elements but overall is rough around the edges and a touch sharp. The flavor shows a definitive sharpness upfront that seems to be a combo of the oak tannin and acetic bite. There are some pleasant qualities to be had though...some cherry skin, dark fruit, and a nice enough acidity shows. Overall the wood is just too sharp and disconcerting for me to really enjoy the flavor. Light-medium bodied with a subtle carbonation.

Tap at the brewery. It’s cliche, but visiting Hair of the Dog for the first time, I feel like I’m walking into a piece of craft brew history. There a certain thrill to actually seeing the corner bar instantiated in the real physical world, and walking in to feel right at home in a warm converted warehouse space long on good beer and short on attitude.
On to the beer. Michael pours a hazy brown with little in the way of head into their HOTD tulip. Nose of cherry and raspberry and a touch of vanilla oak. The first sip is a joyous surprise -- the beer explodes with flavor in a way that I associate with Matt and Adam for some reason. Of course there is a cherry-like Flanders red thing going on here, but there also a ton of oak, bringing a vanilla woodiness that actually resonates well with the sour base beer. Underneath a little bit of that balsamic business common to reds, but almost like a strawberry balsamic. Strikes a good balance in terms of drinkability and flavor; acidity is gently warm on the throat. A very enjoyable flanders red.

2009 vintage bottle shared by fred82, thanks dude. pours clear medium dark golden-orange with a nice off-white cap, some retention and lacing. woodsy-plenty, vinous, bourbony and rum-like barrel components at the same time, very fruity - cherries mostly, but also raisins and tart little fruits, smooth caramel - brilliantly supporting, bit of brown sugar, aromatic acetic notes that complement the acidic profile - that is a light acidity, just enough to balance that moderate sweetness. moderate carbonation, light body - quite oily and almost silky, grassy-spicy, tart and astringent finish. lovely.
