3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
On tap at the brewery. Pours a dark very cloudy brown color with no real head, some bubbles. Super low carbonation. A sweet nose of brandy, smoke, charred wood, a bit of smoke. The flavor is massive heat, tobacco, leather, light yeast, toffee, sweet sugary malts. A huge clear HOTD beer, Alan’s trademark is all over this.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Past notes. On tap at hotd. Colour...very hazy brown with a thin off white head. Nose...heavy notes of fruit leather and brandy! Gobs of raisins and currants with freshly bark stripped oak stems and leaves and old brandy. Palate...massively oaky and ripe with currants and prune paste. The brandy is big but the ABV stays hidden well ( perhaps in order to kick your ass later?!), thus the flavours are allowed to really bring forth their fullness. The finish is long and abundant with more sweetness and even more brandy.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
On tap at brewery. Pours a dark syrupy brown with very little cap that rings the glass. Wonderful aroma of raisin, molasses, brandy, and wood. Tastes like my shorts are getting tight. Also like wood, brandy, overripe plums and raisin, vanilla. A powerhouse of brandy. Yet another HotD beer I’d stick my dink in if it wouldn’t ruin the beer.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
Draft at the brewpub. Pours a deep, dark brown color with a thin tan head. Aroma is boozy, brandy, fruity, raisin, plum. A little heavy on the palate with soft, smooth carbonation. Flavor is sweet, holy Lord is this a sweet beer, tons of brandy and oak, but I can tell there’s a Belgian strong dark ale in there, malty, dark fruits, cherry, more brandy, with a sweet, brandy finish. Holy brandy, but tasty nonetheless.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
On tap at the brewery.
A: Cloudy mahogany brown with a few strewn bubbles. Ugly in a way only a mother could love.
N: Nose is decidedly sweet with a lot of caramel and toffee. Brandy adds a syrupy cherry warmth. There’s a touch of smoke and char. Some green hops and some spruce and field greens. Peppercorns and some lavender, I think. Dense, chewy oak.
T: Quite sweet, but not cloying. Marascino cherries are prevalent. There’s a nice bitter base to keep things in check. A slight acidity as well.
M: Mouthfeel is sublime. Soft and blanketing with a kiss of carbonation. Alcohol is well hidden.
O: The 20th anniversary beer is shaping up nicely. The combination of the pooch and peuch should age for years as the components are both quite solid.

4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
On tap at the brewery. A special treat to get a taste of this, as Pannepot and the various versions are my favorite beer. The brandy barrel flavor is more pronounced giving it more of an alcohol taste. Some of the spice flavors are a bit stronger than the original Pannepot too. Overall a great beer still.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: APR 11, 2013 Tap @ Hair of the Dog... Dark ruby-brownish pour with thin off-white head. Insane amount of booze and barrel character on this. In a great way. It balanced the sweetness compared to its bourbon aged sibling. Some maltiness, lots of dark fruits with vinous tones, plums, dark chocolate, and dessert tones. Finished with a strong alcohol kick.
