A big, frothy head led to a some what different tasting beer.
As others have noted, it has a candy sugar taste. In fact, to me, it doesn’t resemble
other trippels I’ve had. Also, judging by the wide range of comments, it either doesn’t live long on the shelf,
or they have a consistency issue.

Bottle. Batch 40. Dusty aroma. Sounds, and looks, like a soda being poured. I mistakenly poured it into a tumbler before realizing what style it was, and then transferred it into a tulip glass. Despite a small lasting head and lace being present in the tumbler after first pour, all of the head left the glass after the second pour almost immediately, although plentiful and lively carbonation continued to pour up from the bottom, seemingly being produced by the small amount of sediment that made it into the second pour. Hazy amber in color. Doesn’t taste right upon initial tasting. Could it be possible that the tulip glass was dirty? Alcohol hammers the palate at first sip and coupled with the strong dust aroma, caused me to gag. Flavor is peppery and tough to swallow. I am now wondering if I poured it too quickly and got too much of the sediment or if the double pour screwed up the beer somehow, or if the 2nd glass was dirty. I wouldn’t think that any of these would cause issues like this, however. Is it a bad bottle? This is simply not a very enjoyable brew. Very alcoholic inital and aftertaste. Harsh and dry and tastes unfinished. I had to pour most of it out. This has to be a bad bottle.

Bottle @ Spiesy’s gaff. I’ve wanted a Hair of the Dog beer for a while so was very pleased that Duff brought this to the gathering. Huge disappointment. The aroma is odd and not clearly defined - it hints in the direction of an acidic lambic but also pulls toward a Triple. It’s muddled and murky. It’s a bottle conditioned beer so perhaps the constant travelling has disturbed it too much - the appearance is a cloudy pale yellow. Taste is yeast and a nasty hop pellet bitterness. Quite nasty.
2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 4/20 thewolf (8666) - Kolding, DENMARK - MAY 18, 2007
Bottle. Pours an orange red with a hazy glow. Head is practically non-existent. Aroma is vinious and berry-like fruity. Flavour has a definite dryness and a cardboard-like feel, mixing with the viniousness and the berries. Really not a nice brew... The cardboard flavour pervades most of the experience.

chimay chalice- murky orange/ light pink. smell- cherries and yeast. heavy mouth feel for a triple. tastes like yeast and week and a half old leftover vegetables from thanksgiving. Looks good, smells ok, tastes ok. Hair of the Dog is a great brewery, but I just didn’t understand what could be desirable about this beer.

Dark orange/brown. Both aroma and taste is dominated by flowers. It tastes like some kind of wine aged in a flower bath. This beer is unique but lacks at the same time of real depth. One of the strangest beers i’ve ever had. This was not for me...

Batch #38. I was very excited about my first taste of the Hair of the Dog, and if this beer tasted half as good as it looked we’d be in business, but it doesn’t. Pours a cloudy golden colour with an enormous rocky off-white head. Aroma is almost completely overwhelmed by diacetyl butteriness. Underneath that there is apple, peach, and pear fruitiness with a hint of spice. The flavour is also a massive dose of butter. After about 5-10 minutes of swirling to try to get rid of it I still get a muddled mess of flavours, piny hops, some mintiness, light yeastiness, and pale fruity malt. If it wasn’t for the name on the bottle I don’t think I would have even looked for anything nice to say but would have gone straight to the drain with it, which is where it ended up going anyway. Maybe I got a bad bottle.
1.7 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 7/20 Kevin (1953) - Colorado, USA - APR 2, 2005
bottle.#32 pours a hazy amber with no head. smells like a sugar daddy, toffee and caramel, and some earthy/yeast notes. taste is sweet honeyish with chocolate coming through, i think i have a bad bottle. i will pick up more the next time i can and double check. white wine aspects come through in this. no carbonation, very dead mouthfeel. cardboard finish.

I hated this beer. Does anyone enjoy drinking flat soda? No one I know. And that has what to do with ale? My bottle of Golden Rose was as flat as Indiana. No carbonation what so ever. Granted this might have been a fluke or something but it caused me to immediately pour out the remains of my glass. The taste of the ale was really nasty as well. It had this gross fruit / prune presence that was too much. The presentation of the beer also was terrible. No head, no bubbles, sickly-murky, ruddy-brown colour akin to the mighty Mississippi river.

What happened? They brew the Adam. Then this? No head. Way too much candy sugar. I had to work to finish this off. If you want a good Belgian triple purchase a Chimay Cig Cents or a Corsendonk Pale Ale.
