kmweaver (2125), Takoma Park, Maryland, USA Dec 20, 2006 12oz bottle, Batch 14 (!!), courtesy of gears81. Thanks, Jake! I’m not quite sure how old this is, but given the ages listed on the HOTD website for other beers, it seems like it’s from the late 90s; it’s labeled as "Golden Rose". Definitely oxidized at this point, to some benefit. Pours a minimal head (not a benefit), with a murky brownish appearance and an off-white line of bubbles at the edges of the glass. Quite a lot of caramel (a benefit) and maple syrup in the nose, with hints of honey and minimal hops. Lots of burnt caramel in the palate: medium mouthfeel, with chocolate and a light tripel profile underneath; alcohol is well-integrated (as usual for HOTD), with some honey and floral character. Slightly dry finish, showing maple syrup maltiness and yeast. To be honest, this barely resembles a tripel (which I don’t imagine to be a consequence of aging).
LawStudent09 (321), Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA Oct 10, 2008 Brownish red pour with a small bubbly white head. Carbonation present. Nose of sparkling wine and pepper. Taste is strong of beet front and finish with some light friut in the middle and a hint of alcohol. tarjei (1300), Bryne, Norway Sep 19, 2008 12 fl oz bottle from Ølkonsortiet. Batch 41. Abv is 7,5%. Brown color with a small white head. Aroma is spicy with dried fruit. Flavor is sweet with dried fruit, malt and spices. Strange, but good tripel. MiP (6029), Flensburg, Germany Sep 14, 2008 Bottle, 7.5%. Papery, moldy, berrylike aroma. Clear dark amber colour. The flavour starts off with berry, turns to some liquorice root, and then fruity hard berries.Ä If this is a tripel, my arse is a banjo. ucusty (1214), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA Aug 26, 2008 Batch 39. Dark amber pour with fizzy head that quickly dissipates. Brandy, fruit, and sweet malts. Flavor is fresh baked bread, candi sugar, honey and dark fruit. Spicy finish BMan1113VR (913), Los Angeles (and Dallas, TX), California, USA Jul 28, 2008 Batch 34 thanks to kyzr. This beer is unlike any other tripel that I have head. Pours with a small, rocky quickly dissapearing head that left no lacing covering a hazy dark amber body that is way too dark for the syle. Aroma of brandy, plums, cherries, raisins, raspberries, sugar and honey. Taste is yeasty with fruits (rasisns and currants), canilla and candi sugar. Taste is good, but not faithful to the style in the slightest. On the syrupy side and nearly flat (again not too style). Alcohol is pronounced for 6%. Unsure how old this batch is. A good beer, but not a tripel in my book! Last 1/4 of the bottle, when added to my glass turned the beer the same color and clarity of mud.
