COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Rose is named for Portland, Oregon, the Rose City. Originally called Golden Rose, this Beer started life as a straight forward Belgian Tripel and evolved into a Beer made with beets, hibiscus flowers and pink peppercorns. She has always been inspired by the Belgian style known as Tripel, which has a low level hops and is deceivingly light in body for its alcohol strength. This is achieved through the use of imported Belgian candi sugar. Not Brewed since 2005.

UPDATED: APR 28, 2008 12.22.04 12oz bottle, batch 33, thanks to loweredsixth. When I cracked the cap off of this brew, I noticed an unusual white moldy looking funk on the lip of the bottle, I wiped it off with a wet towel and poured into my etched Duvel galss. I love HOTD and I love Tripels, so you can imagine how much I wanted to love this brew...so much so that I had to beg Fresno for a bottle. Anyway, the pour was murky and golden with massive lacing. The bottle flirted with gushing, but gave up at the rim. Huge beige head of large bubbles. Little eff is enticed after the pour by the glass etching. This pen sucks..Oh, nevermind...A strong sense of grenadine is noticed with each whiff, along with some fresh peach, light must, sugar syrup, lots of alcohol, apple skin. This can’t be right. Flavor is salty, sharply tart like lettuce ofr grass, fresh pineapple core; really it’s not that tasty or sweet, or drinkable. There was that (typical HOTD) mold around the cap; maybe it was infected, bad, etc. Lots of burning alcohol; I’m terribly disappointed. My dad confirms my detection of butterscotch. Damn. Oh, hell -- it’s infected.

20070303re-rate and bumped the score a full point. Batch 35. Sweeter, caramel notes. Much better than recalled.

Batch 41 - Pours murky reddish brown with a tiny bubbly head. Aroma of ripe fruits, malts and cellar notes. Taste is malty and yeasty with tart ripe fruits and slight sourness. Next to no carbonation, fruity and berry finish. A bit unbalanced, perhaps has seen its best days.

35,5 cl bottle @ Ølbaren, batch #41
Aroma is slightly sweet with caramel, some rosehip and moldy potato cellar. Flavour is rather weird with moldy cellar aromas, some tart red wine and hints of vinegar. Far from a tripel and definitely past its prime.

Pours an amber colour without a head. Aroma of sweet raspberries, mandarin orange and some yeast. Flavour of sweet raspberries, dough, wood and some malts. Light bodied, slick mouthfeel and a watery, slightly fruity finish with some alcohol. Has clearly seen it’s best days already.

bottle, batch 2 when it was called golden rose, from 96 I believe... a bit oxidized as you would think but really easy to drink with some great honey notes, alcohol well hidden... I’d track down one of the 2000 batches for sure!

12 ounce bottle batch 41 thanks to Jacob. Pours a murky caramel color with a medium white head that quickly dissipates. An interesting nose of sweet candied beets (I mean, this is something I’d never put a finger on it till it was mentioned but now I can’t help notice it) and some tartness. The flavor is a very odd medicinal/herbal mix alongside both tart flavors and more traditional sweet sugary Tripel flavors. Some oxidation. Interesting.

Bottle, Golden Rose, shared with GT2, thank you kindly sir! Pour is hazy dark gold with a small yellow head, no surprise given the age. Aroma is fantastic: rich malty barleywine, caramel, butterscotch, orange, spiced beets. Flavor is burnt sugars, creme brulee, butterscotch. Very sweet. Palate is oily, warm, sweet, a bit flat. Great stuff.
