[2000 vintage, on tap at Popeye’s] Very sherry-like aroma with some toastiness, and plums. Ruby brown with no foam. Nice sherry/port flaovur with pleasant toasty finish and tons of dried fruit. A bit of an ethanol flavour, unfortunately. Full body and very low carbonation.

Head is just thin white ring. Almost opaque black body, just dark red at bottom. Sweet coffee and wild berries aroma, slight earth and chocolate notes. Very harmonic. Deep intense sweet earth, coffee, and wild berries taste with notes of plums and chocolate. Strong alcohol heat. Dry mild aftertaste with vanilla and licorice notes. Excellent beer, even if barley wine is a bit of a stretch. (0.1l on tap? At Popeye.)

Sampled on tap at Popeye’s in Tokyo on 2/18/07. From 2000. Dark brownish, reddish-purple color. Super potent aroma of hops and a vinous, fruity quality. Amazingly huge flavors of hops, sugar, red wine, sweet dried fruits, and caramel. Maybe a slight trace of alcohol. Lightly carbonated, sticky sweet, but super dry finish. Warming alcohol presence. Really special stuff.

Had at the Tokyo Real Ale Festival. Dark in color with ruby red highlights and a nice creamy tan head. Aroma of sherry, dark fruits, yeast, and alcohol. Flavor was a beautiful mixture of sherry, whiskey, raisins, yeast, caramel with the alcohol hidden pretty well but still noticeable. Leaves you with a sweet alcoholic finish. The body is thick with minimal carbonation. This was my favorite beer at the festival and something I’ll be coming back to again and again.

(Bottle) Shared at the PNW Christmas 2006 party at Oakes on December 9th. Lasting tan head with deep brown. Smokey, iodine, cherry. Very meaty for a beer. Malty and sweet. Delicious. Thanks TimE!

Dark brown and oily. Nose is lots of dark chocolate. Quite sweet and smooth on the mouth with darker malt flavour and chocolate. Light alcohol on the finish but considering the ABV this one delivers a nice flavour.
