4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Caskalefan (90) - Bellingham, USA - APR 17, 2011
I would have rated this higher, except for the sweetness level which was excessive, even for the style.
Nice, complex fruitiness with mixed berries, dates, figs, kumquats, a hint of chocolate, rum, molasses, and vanilla.
Long, sweet finish, although the hints of barrel aging (which i understand that this brew has NOT undergone) dry it out a little bit.
Delicious as a slow sipper, although a bomber is a bit much to handle in one sitting.
almost no alcoholic heat, which is very impressive for a young 13% brew, and I find this beer to be a very pleasant surprise, coming from Hales.
3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 savnac (1481) - Anchorage, Alaska, USA - MAY 24, 2012
22 oz waxed bottle from Eric, thanks man. Deep mahogany with a head that instantly fizzes out. Huge aroma of alcohol, dates, figs, cherries, toffee and some chocolate. Flavor is hot alcohol, sweet dark fruit, some funky/sour yeast esters and light bitter chocolate. Medium body with active, prickly carbonation and an oily mouth feel. This one smells great, kind of an odd vinegar sourness detracts a bit in the taste though.
4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 michaelinwa (207) - Bothell, Washington, USA - OCT 17, 2011
Pours a deep, dark, reddish brown color. Taste is complex. Sweet with raisin, plum, and figs. The trappist ale yeast shows itself strongly in this beer, but the experience is more robust than most trappist ales I’ve tried. The addition of the champaigne yeast is also evident, and works very well. I love this beer or it’s big, unique, sweet, complex taste. It’s almost wine like. I’ll be stashing several bottles of this in my beer cellar. Great beer; don’t miss it!!
2.8 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 10/20 VernMeyer (1) - Silverdale, Washington, USA - OCT 8, 2011 does not count
After reading the reviews, i may have gotten a bad batch. All vinegar, aroma, taste, everything. I had it on tap the night it was released, served by none other than mike himself. It was alright then, but im not reviewing that. The bottle i have did not sit well. Overall, it’s worth the try. If nothing else, after the bottle of 13 ABV, you wont be minding anything.

Wax Dipped Bomber. Dark mahogany colored with a thin layer of light brown head. The aroma is a tart and sugary blend of raisins, candied dates, butterscotch and booze. The flavor starts off with dark caramel and toasted malt and follows with unexpected white wine sweetness and citrus coffee notes. Also some figs, green apple and prune flavors in the mix. The alcohol is surprisingly well hidden for 13%. The body is moderately carbonated with a sour, fruity finish. An intriguing brew for sure although the sour fruitiness doesn’t quite work with the traditional dark fruit and caramelized sugar flavors of a Quad.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Ibrew2or3 (4985) - Phoenix, Arizona, USA - SEP 1, 2011
Courtesy of riversideAK. Pours mahogany with thin sort of off white head. The aroma offers up musky and semi tart prunes, raisins, figs and brown sugar backed up by booze at the end of the draw. The taste starts a bit on the tart side with a firm level of raspberries and slightly un-ripe cherries that roll toward notes of prunes, brown sugar coated raisins and some booziness into the finish.

Thanks to Mages64 for sending this out in a BIF a few months back. Served in a Mikasa goblet.
Pours very dark, nearing on black. Slight garnet hue to it. A sparse head forms after a hard pour, dissipating pretty quickly to a thin collar with a bit of light lacing on the sides of the glass. The nose carries quite a bit of cherry and dark fruits. Tart cherries are quite prominent. Almost a bit of oak as well. To echo JohnGalt1 below, it seems as if this is barrel-aged, whether partially or in full. The flavor brings out more tart cherry and a bit of earth plus dark fruits and sweetness. Mild caramel. Medium body with light carbonation. Pretty decent and an interesting take on the style.

Thanks to IBrew2or3 for the share. Pours brown with red highlights and a tan head. Nose is sour cherries, cherries, syrup, malt, some booze, and dark fruit. Flavor is similar with cherries and caramel, malt, and hints of booze. Medium in body, and interesting overall.
4.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 bhensonb (7589) - Woodland, California, USA - JUL 4, 2011
Bomber from Malt & Vine. Pours really dark brown with a creamy/foamy 3 finger dark beige head. Aroma of darkish fruits. Med + body. Slightly sour, very dark fruity, fair amount of anise, dark malt. Coffee? I don’t get that. Chocolate is possible. Complexity is enormous. My goodness gracious flavor intensity. Wow. Dark fruit seems a lot more raisin with time. Glad to see the anise get submerged. My mouth is getting sucked into a black hole of flavor. Not necessarily my ideal flavor profile, but it is intense.

Pours dark brown with an off white head. Smells of molasses, dark fruit, some vanilla, spicy. Tastes of vinegar, tarte cherries, some roasted malt, more dry vinegary hints as the beer warms. Finishes balsamic.
