4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Great varied nose of patent malt, roast, dark chocolate, rye whiskey, vanilla, dark fruit. Pours viscous black, oily, heavy legs, great beige head, wonderful lace. Roast, acrid patent malts balanced by dark chocolate and dark fruit, vanilla, sweet chocolate, light spicy rye notes, wood barrel. Damn, best hales beer ever? Yes. Balanced, creamy smooth body, dry roasty finish. Really drinkable. YES!

april 2012 on tap at Haleís. Smell of semi-sweet chocolate; very pleasant on a palate; creamy; raisin and chocolate, very well-balanced. Haleís absolute favorite.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Growler that I had filled a couple of weeks ago. Pours a viscous super dark brownish black with tight dark tan head. The nose has slight oxidation, with good amount of deep dark chocolate, vanilla, raisins, tobacco, light spicy rye notes...smells really good! The body is surprisingly smoother than the pour suggests and the carbonation is perfect for the style. Patent malt, chocolate, blueberry, tobacco, subtle rye...but present, vanilla and light peat. Damn this is solid and the barrel is complementary to the base beer.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Huge thanks to Brandon for this one!! Poured black as night with a near equally black head. The aroma picked up a warm blend of darker chocolates with accents of coconut, hazelnut, sweet whiskey, and vanilla.. not a whole lot of barrel presence, but what was there was entirely complementary.. like a decadent chocolate cake. The flavor opened with cherry-kissed chocolates and a little oaky edge.. the middle was syrupy and thick, but lacked some definition (lots of chocolate, though).. tart, near-metallic whiskey, black pepper, and oak surrounded.. finished with more tartness and chocolate, plus a little alcohol warmth. Heavier-bodied and viscous on the palate.. lots of roast (burnt at times).. low carbonation.. decent feel overall, but a little too much tartness, and the nose set up unrealistic expectations of "smooth".

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bomber from Malt & Vine as the simplified BA version. Pours dark brown/black with a slight creamy/foamy dark tan head. I swear Iím getting shellfish in the aroma. Sheesh. Seattle on my mind! Full bodied - very. Flavor is very smooth burnt malt, oak, and hints of rye spice. With some chocolate and a touch of espresso. Every sip suggests shellfish. TF is that! Finishes smoothly dark, chocolate, espresso bitter. The shellfish thing is frustrating, but itís one heck of a tasty ale.

3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
On tap @ Beer Junction. Iím assuming this is the listed beer, Haleís no longer calls it Pikop Andropovs Rushin... And itís listed as bourbon barreled. Anyway, pours inky black with thick mocha brown head that retains well. Aroma is sharp boozy bourbon and not much else. Taste is smooth roasty malt with a rich somewhat thin body. Big bourbon barrel flavor on the back. Potent, high abv easily noticed.

Sadly a case of poor aging. The effect here is drinking thinned and not particularly good whiskey. The taste is bitter whiskey. No stout comes through at all. Just not that good. C-

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Brewer is excellent at brewing interesting beers that donít quite hit the mark. This one seems to be flying completely under the radar. It pours black with an average, disappearing head. Aroma is relatively mild but nice, with dark chocolate, bourbon, vanilla; wish there was more of it. Flavor is roasted, dark chocolate, bourbon and a little bitterness. Donít know the ABV, but thereís some alcohol bite in this. Not a sweet or heavy beer, but not at all thin; decent palate. Finishes with lots of flavor, but there is just a little cardboard taste in there that probably doesnít belong. Overall a pretty decent BA brew from Hales; glad they made it.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bomber. Pours black with a solid layer of cappuccino foam. Aroma is a blend of mocha, toffee, vanilla and whiskey. The taste starts with a substantial dose of dark chocolate, roasted malt and bourbon along with some caramel, dark fruits and coffee. Mouthfeel is medium-bodied with moderate carbonation and a dry, charred oak finish. Overall, a significant improvement over the base beer.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
22 oz. bottle, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma is very subtle, with notes of roasted malt and a little whiskey. Flavour brings out wood, whiskey barrels, and toasted malt. The whiskey is upfront, without being boozy. Medium bodied and well-balanced, with a low-to-medium complexity. Good stuff.
