3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 baobubba (455) - Starkville, Mississippi, USA - OCT 23, 2003
Dark nut brown in appearance with a thin off-white head. Nice chocolatey aroma with a hint of cotton candy and molasses. Fruit comes out on the semi-sweet taste that finishes a little bitter. The bitterness almost seems as if it could be coming from the malts, but with some thought I am sure it is a hop bitterness. A good porter.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 prpplague (247) - Euless, Texas, USA - MAY 8, 2003
dark rum colored appearance with super fine carbonation bubbles, very small head and minimal lace, goor rich coffe/carmel aroma, with smooth chocolate taste and pleasant hop/carmalized sugar finish
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 BillKismet (2761) - Seattle, Washington, USA - DEC 8, 2002
Black bodied with a ring of head and a twinge of amber. The atmospher, unfortunately was quite smokey. However, the aroma itself was undeniably smoky with a burnt attribute. The flavor was deep, dry coffee and by most accounts, this beer seemed akin to a lower a/c imperial stout. Need to sample again.
4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 KingPinHead (390) - Des Moines, Washington, USA - JUL 29, 2002
Had this on a hand-engine...Aroma is malty--both sweet and roasty, and also a bit estery..very nice indeed. This is what a porter should look like: darkest brown with a creamy wheat-hued head that coats the glass as it is drawn down. The flavor is rich and complex: mellow roastiness introduces itself, followed by a bloom of flavors ranging from a modest fruity tang to subtle sweet caramel to the mild/dry hop/coffee finish. This brew is smooth and has a fine creamy feel to it--substantial body as well, but not ’heavy.’ This is an outstanding example of the brewer’s art in evidence: complex, well-balanced, attractive to behold...Mike Hale’s dedicated team impresses once again...
4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 Gusler (2654) - Tucson, Arizona, USA - DEC 28, 2000
lucky for me that I have a friend who drives down here from their hometown about 3 or 4 times a year. He just last week brought me a case of hales ales, a mixed bag, Now I have sampled them all. Dark and rich, nice nose and a great semisweet finish.
