Nut Brown Ale is a dark “session beer” -- lots of great beer character but not too high in alcohol. This ale is well balanced, featuring a distinctively malty structure that makes for very pleasant drinking. 5.2% ABV 14 IBUs Malts: 2-Row Pale ~ Crystal 60L & 120L ~ Victory ~ Chocolate ~ Aromatic Hops: Columbus ~ Mount Hood ~ "Experimental" hop Original Gravity: 13° Plato

Pours a very dark, almost opaque, brown with a small tan head, mostly dissipating. Nose is not pronounced, mostly alcohol. Very creamy on the palate. Predominated taste is the hops accompanied by a burnt coffee/chocolate taste. Pleasing dry finish. Good companion to a deli sandwich and chips.

12oz shorty bottle. Deep toffee-brown color, with a foamy head that laces the sides of the glass. Toffee, coffee aroma. Rich, medium bodied, on the verge of full. Mossy, with an odd twangy tartness to complement the sticky sweet malt tones. Piny, with some pungent caramel undertones. A really odd beer, possibly infected. Some harsh brown chocolate bitterness. Lots of interesting ingredients, but a rather poorly executed product.

Taster at Hales. Soft copper colour. Partial head. Soft malt aroma. Moderate body with strong nutty flavours. Finish reminds me of peanut butter! My wife tasted it and discounted my peanut butter claim but could not place the unusual taste.

On tap at Hales. Color was a slightly darker brown with an off white head. Aroma was bit of fruit, caramel and nuts. Flavor was much of the same, with a bit more nuttiness. Just not a very good beer.

Thanks to Riverside AK for sending this one! Small off-white head over a clear, ruby toned brown body. Spicy malt aroma. The flavor is light malt sweetness with a touch of cocoa. Thin.

Bottle. Pours clear dark amber with an off-white head. Aroma of toffee, nuts, earth. Light body and moderate carbonation. Lightly sweet taste of caramel, nuts, bread. Dry and lightly bitter finish. A nice, light, sessionable brew, but the lightness of the body is a bit of a contrast to the relatively chewy character of many brown ales, and leaves the finish seeming a bit wanting to me.

Nutty sweet malts, with hints of vanilla, dark cherry, and caramel. Slightly tannic. Crisp hop finish. Not as bitter as other offerings from Hale’s.
