COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
First brewed in 1988, O’Brien’s Harvest Ale is a much anticipated autumn classic and one of the Northwest’s original seasonal ales. For the last 21 years Hale’s brewers have ushered in the fall season by crafting a delicious, hearty seasonal ale that features generous amounts of select hops. This year’s O’Brien’s Harvest Ale is a reintroduction of the recipe we used in 2007 which was a Silver Medal winner at GABF.

UPDATED: OCT 8, 2008 Pours dark amber from the 12 ounce bottle with one finger cream color head and lots of lacing. Aroma is floral hops. Taste is full roasted malts to almost balance the darkly bitter hop flavor. Less carbonation than most. Pleasant and easy drinker.

Murky amber with little head. Pleasant caramel malt and floral hop aroma. Strong hop flavor with good balancing sweet caramel malt and bitterness. Centennial hops? A bit thin in body and has some astringency. Not bad.

cathcacr (634) - Oregon, USA - DEC 14, 2007
In appearance, mouthfeel, texture and palate, this is very much like a Hair of the Dog beer. Appearance is an unfiltered deep golden-brown with a lingering, hard head. Flavor is rather standard for a harvest ale, but the throatfeel, carbonationy finish, after-taste, and gut-feel is all HoTD.

Bier brauen (246) - Bremerton, Washington, USA - DEC 2, 2007
On tap at Hales Ales Seattle pours out a clear amber topped with a tan cream head. A nice combo of sweet malts and light hops. A nice little bitter end on this brew.

Bottle. Pours hazy dark red-orange with small beige head. The aroma is fresh and fruity hops with some pine, sweet earthiness, and caramel. The flavor has a slightly grassy hop kick at first, then some piney bitterness. Beneath that is sugary sweet malt, toffee, and burnt caramel. The finish is bittersweet and slightly ashy. This is a reasonably tasty brew.

Darker amber color with a light head. Aroma of earthy, tobacco-laden, fresh hops. Flavor is earthy, sticky, and hoppy, but without the super-sticky-fresh essence of some of the best Fresh hop brews. Nice feel and finish. Enjoyed it overall.
