Well the name and the labeling are crafty with the whole Stalin-communism vibe but the beer looks more like light brown disappointment than red menace and I prefer American-Imperialist vibes anyway. The smell is a little like perfume and reminds me of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale which is instantly a good sign. It leaves a dry after taste, has a good pale ale flavor, slight bit of grassy hops, bitter, good stuff but nothing approaching Nugget Nectar. In addition to this and the Mongoose, Hale’s is looking like a good addition to the selection here. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 08-03-2007 20:30:12

Clear copper color with a small, diminished lid of beige bubbles. Interesting aromas of grapefruit zest and licorice. The licorice isn’t too strong, so as I have strong objections, but close. HInts of grain and dough in the background. Grainy start that is quickly taken over by a citric and pine-like, near cleaner, type flavors. Earthy pine in the finish. I seem to be catching a bit of chlorine in the mix. Slightly astringent linger. Just another amber, that does not excite my synapses.

From a 12 oz bottle his poured a clear copper with an off-white head and light lacing. Nose of caramel malts and floral hops. Medium mouthfeel. Flavor is lightly bitter and so is the dry finish.

2009 Bottle - Pours copper with a medium off white head...aroma is malty, caramel and hop florals, some cereal grain...flavour is nicely bitter if not a bit thin, biscuit and hops that turn a bit soapy near the end...meh...

22 oz. Light haze on the darkish copper body; lasting eighth-inch of creamy bubbles above. Mild nose is caramel, light grain and grass. Flavor is a bit stronger with the same flavors and a more crisp, hay-like finish. Light-medium body is watery and mostly smoothly carbonated with a dryish finish.

On tap at Hale’s. Pours clear dark amber with a small off-white head. Aroma is metallic caramel and oatmeal. Citrus and pine hops somehow show up in the taste, which has plenty of malt. Medium body; nice roasty bitter pine finish.

Bottle, #470. Hazy amber pour with decent head and lacing. Light floral hop aroma. Floral hops, earthyness and a bit of malt in the flavor. Not great.

Poured a deeper and lightly cloudy amber color with a large (4 finger) off white head. Aromas of caramel, juicy oranges, and some flowers. Stronger floral tasting with caramel, and citrus. I also got a light spiciness in the aroma towards the bottom of the bottle. Sweet with a lightly bitter hop finish
