COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
When you set out to make a beer that's gonna keep a troll happy, it better have a lot to chew on. This one does. Troll Porter pushes the porter category to a new edge--big, complex, quite black with herbal hop influences--enough to keep that grouchy old troll off your back, at least for a while... Ingredients:Pale malted barley, Carastan, Caramel, Chocolate, Black and Special Roast Malts, Nugget and Mount Hood hops, Hale's special yeast and filtered water.

Cream-coloured head, diminishing. Dark. Malty aroma, hints of coffee, redcurrant, blackberry and rasberry. Creamy feeling. Then dry, a bit bitter and a finish that resembles that metallic taste of blood. Purchased in Seattle, shared at the Superpower beer session part II in Tromsø 29.01.09

Pretty roasty. A somewhat thickish porter. Quite a bit of coffee in this. Flavor is okay, not amazing.

22 oz. bottle purchased at World Market in Newport News, VA. Beautiful black pour with creamy tan head. Aroma of floral hops and some roasted malts. Flavor is a bit to citrusy for a porter and really dominates over the coffee and smoke flavors that are faintly present in the background. The mouthfeel, however, is superb; thick and rich. Overall a decent porter. I feel that if the hops had been toned down a bit this could have been outstanding.

Capa (1969) - Manama, BAHRAIN - JUL 29, 2009
Dark with a medium tan head. Some light roasted notes and a surprising amount of citrus hops mixed with molasses. Odd. Flavor is much the same. Very sour, as well. Thin, carbonated mouth. I was really looking for more in this one. Can’t say I’m a fan.

Pint at Hales. Black with a thin head. Attractive dark malt scent. Strong dark bitter porter. Hint of molasses. An agressive dark beer. Hops and spice. Prune and raisin. Dark malt flavour. A little more adventerous than the norm.

On tap at Hales. Had decent expectations for this one, but yet again it was not very good. Color was dark brown. Aroma of roasted malt with a touch of sweet malt. Flavor was of fruit, roasted malt, with a bit of chalkiness.

Cask @ Bardenay - Pours a thin brown with no head...aroma is toasty, a bit of sweet malt...flavour is roasted grain, a bit of char, clean enough, but just not that good...finish is a bit watery with a lingering bitterness...meh...

Thanks to Stefan and Elisabeth for bringing a 650ml bottle from Seattle to Tromsø. Pours a dark, brown-red body with a low, vanilla coloured head. Nice glass-lacing. Rather vaguely aroma with hints of roasted malts and dry herbs. The taste brings overriped, dark fruits with minerals and hints of iron, giving it all a metallic profile. Dry bitter endnotes. As I had expected more, the Troll Porter turned out a bit disappointing, but still rather drinkable [Shared at a beer session, Tromsø 29.01.2009].

Thanks to Andre for the bomber! Poured deep reddish-brown with a short cap of tan head. The aroma picked up toasty caramel and slightly sour coffee with lesser notes of cocoa and burnt black patent.. moderate-to-heavy overall roast. The flavor had a little more sourness than I’d like, but it was still tasty.. caramel and coffee grounds with moderate roast on the core.. light herbal and tea-like bitterness around.. finished with sour black malts and some residual sweetness. Medium-bodied with moderate carbonation on the palate.. OK flow, but the sourness got in the way at times. OK overall.

7/28/2007: Hale’s Troll Porter has a clear brown color. There is a frothy brown head on top and not much aroma. The flavor is dry and contains some roasted malt and hints of chocolate. However, the flavor really seems watered down despite the medium-light to medium body that is smooth on the palate. This is a very disappointing brew.

Sample from 22 fl. oz. bottle sent to me by bitbucket and shared at the "Columbus Tasting: Ate, now with gramatical errors" event. Thanks Bob! Rating #70 for this beer...
