COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
When you set out to make a beer that's gonna keep a troll happy, it better have a lot to chew on. This one does. Troll Porter pushes the porter category to a new edge--big, complex, quite black with herbal hop influences--enough to keep that grouchy old troll off your back, at least for a while... Ingredients:Pale malted barley, Carastan, Caramel, Chocolate, Black and Special Roast Malts, Nugget and Mount Hood hops, Hale's special yeast and filtered water.

Deep black this has a rich espresso/coffee flavor to it and is quite thick, even for a porter. Bitters come through on the taste.

Dark brown with a chalky roast in the aroma. A touch earthy. Flavors of metallic roast, chalk, earth, and dirt. Actually kind of unpleasant, but gets a bit better as it warms. Less metallic and chalky, and more roasty with nice sweetness.

Looked great and smelled pretty good, but I was confused by the taste. Not much to it with a slightly sour/metallic aftertaste. Possibly I got a bad bottle. Will visit Hale’s to find out what’s what an re-rate.

BBB63 (5946) - La Porte, Indiana, USA - MAR 24, 2008
UPDATED: MAR 26, 2008 At the BBB63 comes to Tampa gathering, thanks to Degarth for the offering and a great party:

Brown hued with deep purple haze (hey it was late when I wrote that one) and some small creamy head and lace. The aroma has notes of walnut, earthy and grassy esters, vanilla and chocolate, black patent malt, and some mineral water. The taste is bittersweet chocolate and charred malt with a mild fruity character. Bready and herbal as well leading towards a husky astringent finish (snake boy would not like this beer). The mouth feel is lively and sharp, chalky finish. An okay beer, we should give this to every troll that visits ratebeer and gives Bud a 5 rating methinks or think we all our a bunch of number whores.

Bottle. Deep black with lightly laced tan head pour. Hop/malt aroma. Chocolate foretaste that lasts. A bit mixed in style.

Bottle… March 08 Tampa Bay Tasting... Clear, burnt orange brew (when held up to bright light); dark, otherwise. Metallic, minerally nose provides restrained notes of cola, chocolate and vanilla. Full-bodied with a velvety mouthfeel and ticklish carbonation. Robust. Well-bittered. Chocolate and roasted nuts. Medium length, smooth, creamy finish. Kudos to Degarth for providing the bottle!

Courtesy Degarth. Pours a dark brown, with a light off white head. Smells of malty sweet chocolate caramel, dark fruit, and subtle roast. Medium to light bodied, mostly roasty in its flavor. Could have used a touch more body as it was a little thin on the palate. Some subtle chocolate and dark fruit notes made up the slightly bitter finish. Decent at best.

22 oz bottle, via 5000. Pours a clear dark brown body under a small fizzy brown head that vanished quickly to a thin ring. The nose is really roasty and chocolaty with some light burnt caramel. Some moderate hoppiness. First thought was that it was pretty hoppy, and maybe a little husky. Equal parts chocolate malt and chalky roast, very dry. Mouthfeel is dry with a watery texture and nice soft fizzy carbonation. Long roasty finish. Overall, a nice enjoyable hoppy Porter. Not the greatest, but a solid effort.

Bottle from bitbucket - thanks! This one has a darker brown color with a medium head. Aroma has some pleasant chocolate and roast. Flavor has a stronger chocolate/roast thing going on but fell off a bit as it seemed a tad oxidized. Drinkable, but not all that well put together.

22oz bottle. Poured a dark brown color with a large sized off white head. Aromas of chocolate, roast, and some toasted caramel. Tastes of roast, coffee, and light chocolate. Body on the thinner side.
