Loved this one-off from my hometown heros. Cloudy orange, smells
like limes. Creamy body from the firkin, low carbonation. Smells amazing, like a citrus grove. Bone dry, very lime forward, some lemon, Lee said he used Meyer lemons and limes. This beer takes the dry, citrusy aspects of Akari Shogun and amplifies all the best parts. Great idea. Lee says he’d add less citrus and more hops, but I can’t think of a better brew for a hot day. Again: brilliant idea.

At the cask tent at GTMW2013. Pours a golden pour with a few bubbles of head. Aroma of citrus zest, citrus hop aromas, really nice smelling. Citrus flavor, bits of melon and tropical fruit sweetness. Slick mouthfeel, finishes bitter. Nice.

2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Firkin. Pours cloudy light murk gold with white head. Aroma smells like lime juiceand well nothing else. Flavors really pithy, like lime flavored pinesol, firm bitterness from the zest, really out of balanced here as the base is lost. Theres some redeemable fresh juicy fruit Flavors here and slight peppery finish that works, just think the lime and lemon is over done here.

Cask pour on tap at the tap room (Chicago, IL). What’s up, pantanap! Pours a well hazed darker amber pour, natural applesauce haze, glowing orange and amber body. Thicker bright white head atop remains a nice layer, laces well. Aromas throw a bit citrusy bite, lots of lime and lemon zest meet vibrant dry and bitter florals, citrusy grapefruit, honeydew, and some gentle white grape. Some bready malt, flaked wheat and dough. The zest really steals the show here for me. Initial is the lighter end of the fold in body, mellow cask carbonation meets some some bitter floral and lemon hops, citrusy and fruity, florals and grapefruit. Middle serves as s segway the bready malt and flaked wheat is dry, grainy, provides just a touch of girth especially with the lighter carbonation. Backend quickly jumps into that rich zest addition, lime then lemon, some bready flaked wheat is dry. More mellow hoppy backend and finish let’s the zest do more work. The cask works up front quite well, the treatment is pretty solid and fu, a bit more flabby for me in that segway and backend, perhaps just due to the nature of cask carbonation, but the zest does the work back there and tries to make you forget that. A vibrant nose and front end trails off a bit more. Nice.

Firkin Friday pour consumed at the source... Pours a hazy milky non-pausteurized apple cider pour and topped with a creamy thin milky white film... Gingery lemon aspects, lemongrass, and pale wheat backing. Pretty assertive on the lemon front but refreshing nonetheless... Flavors are more of the same with lemon grass and rind shavings throughout. Soft grain backdrop. Easy going and just shy of medium bodied. Refreshing but probably prefer the original shogun more.
