3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap: The aroma consists of chocolate, black licorice, coffee, vanilla, faint bourbon, and burnt notes. It’s a dark brown with no transparency and a small khaki head. The flavor starts with dark chocolate and a touch of fruit. The finish has coffee, vanilla, light bourbon, and oak. It’s medium-full bodied with soft carbonation and a creamy mouthfeel.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at local option. Newly added... Pours a pretty solid black hue, consistent throughout and topped with a creamy light beige head... Aroma of bourbon for sure being the prominent note with a nice solid bakers chocolate backing. A bit boozy but a nice combination of coconut and vanilla notes to go with the hardness... Flavors are sweet and smooth with a distinguished barrel character which is assertive but not boozy. Chocolate notes are notable and not completely overwhelmed. Smooth creamy body with lighter than normal carbonation which works in nicely. Little spicy boozy character on the backend. Not sure if this is a newer batch than the precious reviews but this was fairly nice.

2.3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
On tap at FoBAB, so bad didn’t evan want to tick it, then Alex has to go and add it...Light black with some decent tan head, nice cap and retention...The aroma is really bad, glue, medicinal, can’t find anything that resembles a beer...The taste is just as bad, but I can pull out some bitter coffee, surrounded by glue.
This was a horrible mistake, don’t make one by trying this

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft sample at FOBAB 2010. Pours a deep brown color with a huge tan head. Notes of chocolate malts, rye, apples, vanilla, roast, bourbon, and milk sugar. Medium-bodied, with a dry, roasty mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. Odd mix of cream, roastiness, and spice that seems to work.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: DEC 12, 2012 Re-rate from Fountainhead, 2012. Much better overall. Distinct barrel character in the nose and on the palate. Rich and chocolatey, lacks any of the sour notes that were previous. Drying rye and roast, the bourbon is there but not over the top. Really clean and easy drinking. Super stuff.
Draft at FoBAB 8. Pours a deep brown/black with dark tan head. Nose is slightly soured, rye notes are prevalent, some spice and chocolate. On taste, you get a nice hit of rye whiskey character, spicy and sharp and a bit pungent. It works pretty well here and the heat never really builds. Main detractor is the astringency it picked up from the oak. Beside that, pretty solid beer.7-4-7-3-15 3.6

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Sampled at FoBAB 2010 (Chicago, IL). Pours a roasty blackish hue, near opaque, a frothy moderate brown head, laces ok. Aromas are a bit tart, sour cherries, infected? A touch of roast, vanilla, oak. Initial is mellow, roasted and sweet, touches of sweet lactic, light funk, mellow sweetness. Finish is light roast coffee, awkward sour feel. Infected, loses points for balance and taste. Sour cherries, oak with a light char, sweet malts. Just largely a mess. Interesting, but not up to HA’s quality of beers and a dissappointment in that the base is one of my favorites.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Sampled at FoBAB 2010. Huge tan head on a very dark brown colored beer. Aroma has some rye, a bit of whiskey and an odd off fruit note. Tart cherries? Flavor has a nice bourbon component, light chocolate, and off fruitiness. Slightly disappointing as I was expecting excellence from Half Acre, but it was far from bad.
